American Idol: Suggestions- Suck less, soul on this

» Read similar stories filed under:

The contestants have 122 songs to pick from for next week's R&B/Soul theme. You can check out the full list at iTunes, but here are a few of my suggestions for the Idols in the hopes that we don't have to endure another week of suckville song choices and performances.

Didi Benami - Didi is hard to pick for this week. Can she take on one of the two middle-of-the-road Mariah Carey songs cleared? Maybe Monica? I guess if she's staying to play, I'd push her towards Rihanna's "Umbrella" - she might be able to have some fun with that.

American Idol: Bag of steaming stinkers

The disaster better known as American Idol Season 9 soldiers on. After a theme change from "Teen Idol" to "Billboard No. 1s" the contestants hit the stage this week with a bag full of steaming stinkers. Does no one provide any direction whatsoever to the contestants when they are handed a broad category like this? And can anybody tell me how this differs from what the contestants tackled during the semi-finals? Anyway, here's how it all went down:

Could a Rolling Stones-themed Idol night be as huge as when the Beatles catalog was finally made available to the contestants? Answer: No. Not even close.

But I'm sure for many of the contestants it was a tall hurdle to jump to get one step closer to the Top 10 and a place in the summer tour.

So how did they do? Let's take a look:

American Idol: Song selection superstars

Bravo to tonight's Top 8 guys for showing that they can pick good songs to entertain the audience. This is how it's done, folks. I really can't find fault with any of the songs chosen tonight. There was a good range that seemed to fit most of the guys really well. I'd go as far as to say if the group wasn't separated by sex this week, the girls would be in big trouble. But alas, two guys must go, so let's get to the breakdown:

American Idol: Snooze-o-rama

For once, we get an Idol episode devoted almost solely to the singing and the girls - for the most part - fail to take advantage. Although there were some solid performances, there was nothing that gave goosebumps or was fodder for chit-chat around the water cooler. Maybe the boys will provide more interesting performances tomorrow night. Until then...
