Bravo to tonight's Top 8 guys for showing that they can pick good songs to entertain the audience. This is how it's done, folks. I really can't find fault with any of the songs chosen tonight. There was a good range that seemed to fit most of the guys really well. I'd go as far as to say if the group wasn't separated by sex this week, the girls would be in big trouble. But alas, two guys must go, so let's get to the breakdown:
Lee Dewyze
Fireflies
I was wondering if anyone could resist this current chart burner from Minnesota's own Owl City. The chorus is such a catchy melody and I liked Lee's rendition. Interesting to hear such a computerized song performed with an old school instrument like a guitar. I thought it worked. I like Lee. His voice is one of the most distinctive this season. I hope we see more of him.
Alex Lambert
Trouble
Is it wrong to hate Mullethead for taking on a song that Taylor Hicks owns the Idol franchise on? Well I couldn't help it. Even if it is a great song choice and MH did it justice, why won't he just get a haircut?!? When do those Idol stylists step in and make things right? Does that start next week in the Top 12. If he makes it that far, we can only hope so. If some action isn't taken soon, I'll be forced to make a Facebook page on that very subject.
Tim Urban
Hallelujah
Well we're really digging into the bag of Idol tricks tonight. It's like a walk down the Idol Hall of Fame. Tim Urban takes on Jeff Buckley's "Hallelujah"- another of my All-Time Idol Performances (along with Taylor's version of "Trouble"). Jason Castro did "Hallelujah" best two seasons ago, wowing everyone. This performance didn't have that same magic. This is a song that has to be really felt and I didn't get that from him the way I got it from Jason in Season 7.
Andrew Garcia
Genie in a Bottle
So far it's four for four on good song choice tonight. I love this guy. What he can do with an upbeat tune and a guitar is so much fun to see week after week. He's one of the most solid, confident artists the guys have. Andrew deserves a spot in the Top 12.
Casey James
You'll Think Of Me
Casey can definitely do country music if he wants to. He has a beautiful pure voice and it's clear he's comfortable on the stage. Not a wowza performance, but certainly likeable. He should be around next week.
Aaron Kelly
I'm Already There
Aaron got a little crazy with the vibrato on the beginning of Lonestar's "I'm Already There." Then he got a little carried away on the whiny chorus. I like this song but it seemed like Aaron let it get away from him. It was over the top from the get go.
Todrick Hall
Somebody to Love
Did Todrick lift this rendition from the cast of Glee? Sounded a lot like it. This is a super hard song to sing. If you're not going to attempt to walk in the shoes of Freddie Mercury, you better really change it up. He could have taken it to church, he didn't go all the way with it. This version wasn't consistent enough for me.
Michael Lynche
This Woman's Work
It's so nice to have the variety that Big Mike brings to this season. He is the heart and soul of the men left in the competition and as long as he keeps pulling out all the stops like this, he'll have a place on the Idol stage.
Best performance of the night: Michael Lynche (by a better haircut)
Most likely to go home: Todrick Hall, Aaron Kelly
TALK ABOUT IT: What did you think of tonight's performances? Who should make the Top 12?
For another spectacular version of "Hallelujah," make sure to check out K.D. Lang singing it at the opening ceremonies of the Vancouver Olympic Games. She was truly breathtaking. (It's a worthy iTunes purchase)

I almost feel bad seeing Mullethead go. If I don't watch him perform, his voice is really good, but I couldn't get past that hairdo and it appeared that Idol voters couldn't either. Tim Urban watch out. You're next on the needs-a-haircut-desperately list.

There are already four FB groups dedicated to Alex Lambert cutting his mullet. This looks promising: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Alex-Lambert-cut-your-mullet/340319580442?...
