NOTE: to view the most current Backyard Rain Gauge comments and postings, you will first need to scroll down to near the bottom of this particular page and click on the link marked "Last>>" in order to move forward to the most recent page of comments... Then simply scroll toward the bottom of that page to enjoy the latest comments, or add your own thoughts to the mix. (Apparently once a "Forum Topic" receives enough comments to fill more than one page, a reader will no longer be directed to the latest comment automatically). Of course, when you have the time you can always scroll through some of the previous postings - for an interesting look back into our notable weather events from the past (for example, it always feels good to look back during a cold day in January and read a report about "90 degrees and humid" from back on July 7th).
But what exactly is THE BACKYARD RAIN GAUGE anyway? Simply put, it is a great place to find the answer to that age-old question: "So, how's the weather?" This forum will provide my official National Weather Service temperature and precipitation reports from the Chaska area (both rain and snowfall), reports on any severe weather in our area, discussions about our yards and gardens, as well as local forecasts, weather statistics, watches and warnings. And, I hope that you will share your thoughts or questions about our weather - including reports on recent storm damage and rain or snowfall totals from your own backyards - along with any weather-related phenomenon that you have seen or wondered about, and just about anything else that you would like to talk about. Relax - whether it's summer or winter - you're among friends when you gather 'round the Backyard Rain Gauge. Thanks for visiting "the Backyard Rain Gauge" today - be sure to stop back again real soon!

May started out wet this...
Back to page topMay started out wet this year, with Chaska receiving 1.54" of rain between May 1 and May 3. It almost seems as though you can see the grass turning green right before your very eyes! Soon our neighborhoods will be filled with the delightful sounds of buzzing lawn mowers and churning tillers....
What a beautiful weekend!...
Back to page topWhat a beautiful weekend! Saturday (May 3) started out chilly, but it ended up being a nice day for 'Christmas in May' activities in Chaska, with a high temperature of 55 degrees. Sunday was even warmer, with a high temp of 68 degrees. I saw a lot of neighbors out in their yards this weekend - a sight that I had not seen in 6 months!
Boats on Prior Lake and...
Back to page topBoats on Prior Lake and fishermen galore on the shore! A full parking lot at the dog park! Bicycles, scooters, runners and, yes, even a gentleman on his riding lawn mower!
That's what I saw -- It was definitely a well-rounded weekend!
Our lawn and gardens...
Back to page topOur lawn and gardens received a nice watering on Tuesday, when 0.34" of rain fell in Chaska. More rain is expected toward the weekend, with temperatures in the 60's. Let's hope for nice weather for fishing...and Mother's Day!
0.78" of rain fell in Chaska...
Back to page top0.78" of rain fell in Chaska from Saturday morning through Sunday morning. Mother's Day will be mostly sunny, with a chilly wind blowing and temperatures in the upper 50's to near 60 degrees.
We're feeling hot, hot, hot!...
Back to page topWe're feeling hot, hot, hot! The high temperature in Chaska on Friday reached 80 degrees - for the first time since October 7, 2007. Perhaps we've finally left the cool days of early spring behind. Farmers and outdoor enthusiasts alike will certainly be pleased with this development!
Chaska Area Taste enjoyed...
Back to page topChaska Area Taste enjoyed beautiful weather on Wednesday. Temperatures were mild and the winds were nearly calm...and no bugs...a nearly perfect evening for many in City Square Park!
Big storms in Hugo and in...
Back to page topBig storms in Hugo and in Coon Rapids - we certainly dodged a meteorological bullet last weekend! While we were enjoying a warm Sunday afternoon, with highs in the upper 80's (86 degrees officially in Chaska that day), temperatures in the northern metro were only in the 60's. That temperature difference set the stage for the development of some strong storms later in the day. As you have probably heard by now, two separate tornados hit Coon Rapids and Hugo on Sunday, producing major damage along with one fatality and many injuries. The National Weather Service has determined that the Coon Rapids tornado was an EF-1 on the enhanced Fujita scale (with winds up to 100 mph), while the Hugo storm was declared to have been an EF-3 (with top wind speeds of up to 165 mph). Thank God we missed that!
Our weather will slowly warm over the next few days, with highs reaching back into the 70's with a chance of thunderstorms by the end of the week. Hopefully some rain will come our way, as some local lawns have begun to look a bit dry. The last measurable rainfall in Chaska - before Saturday's 0.03" - was all the way back on May 10th when 0.78" fell in our area.
Think it was cold Tuesday?...
Back to page topThink it was cold Tuesday? You're right, it was! Our official high temperature reached only 57 wind-swept degrees in Chaska. That should change begining today, but expect some rain Thursday into Friday.

Back to page topWhen I went for my after-work walk, I started putting on capri pants and a T-shirt but a breeze through my open bedroom window made me change my mind -- and my clothes. I wore wind pants and a long-sleeved T-shirt and was quite comfortable. Still looking forward to multiple days of tank-topped walks!

Back to page topA wet Thursday is on the way! A good chance of rain and thunderstorms on Thursday, with off-and-on rain through the weekend and into Monday. Your lawns and gardens will get a nice free watering over the next few days!
Yay!! That means I won't...
Back to page topYay!! That means I won't have to water my grass seed patches every morning and evening then.
By the way, Greg, since you gave me good advice on the dog burn spots on my lawn, what can I do about a spot of dead grass that is constantly very spongy from apparently not draining properly (even though the property management guy says it is) and has moss growing on it?
Ruth, to deal with a low...
Back to page topRuth, to deal with a low area that does not drain well, you might consider adding a little soil to the area to raise the elevation of the low spot, or installing of some sort of drain tile or pipe. Of course, option B is to "make lemonade when life gives you lemons" by creating a small goldfish pond in the area, or perhaps a small "wetland" by planting a few cat-tails in the low spot (or some other variety of plant that is tolerant of moist soil conditions). If nothing else, that might prompt the "property management guy" to acknowledge and address the problem for you - good luck (and have fun!).
Unfortunately, we are not...
Back to page topUnfortunately, we are not allowed to alter the landscape -- can't plant flowers or even set a birdbath on the lawn that might get in the way of the mowers.
Also, my "low area" is actually at the top of a three-tiered landscape ridge overlooking the second tier that is just trees and grass and the first tier, where the next set of townhomes is located.
There supposedly is a drainage tile in the wet area, which is between our end-unit townhome and the next building. Realistically, it should drain without a tile given the elevation and knowing that water runs downhill, but it is sponge city. I've walked along the split-rail fence behind all of the homes and this is the only squishy spot -- and the only place I see moss growing.
P.S. I also am getting moisture in my basement and had mushrooms growing in the carpet last year -- a wall was cut open to check for a source (not found) and siding taken off and they tried to force water in but couldn't make it happen. So, speaking of lemons...
0.23" of rain fell...
Back to page top0.23" of rain fell officially on Thursday and Thursday night in Chaska. There is a continued chance of rainfall (and even a severe storm or two) in our area over the next few days. The good news is: this weekend will feel a bit more like summer, with highs around 80 degrees.
Almost half an inch of rain...
Back to page topAlmost half an inch of rain fell around Chaska on Friday (5/30) - 0.44" to be precise - with some hail reported in the area, and so our wet streak continues. More scattered rain and thunder is expected over the next week or so, with Sunday looking like the only "dry" day in the bunch (sunny, light winds, high around 80 degrees) so make sure you get out and enjoy it!
Is severe weather coming to...
Back to page topIs severe weather coming to Chaska? Several wet days are on tap for our area, with a fairly good chance of rain through the middle of next week. Severe weather is also likely in southern Minnesota from Thursday afternoon through mid-day on Friday, as a warm front approaches from the south. Baton down the hatches, and stay tuned to your favorite local TV or radio station for the latest information. And, of course, don't forget to check the "Backyard Rain Gauge" here at www.chaskaherald.com for reports and summaries after the storms have passed.
Some hail and heavy rain...
Back to page topSome hail and heavy rain occurred in our area on Thursday, but I have not received any reports of major damage so that is good news! Chaska did receive a burst of nickel-sized hail just before 4:00 pm, and our rainfall totaled 1.12" for the storm event. Thankfully the predicted outbreak of tornadoes did not materialize in our area, although areas to our south and west did see several - I have seen reports of tornado debris blowing across I-90 near Sioux Falls SD.
We will continue to experience a good chance of rain and thunder over the next several days, so you may want to mow your lawn and pull those weeds when (if) you get the chance!
Greg, do you know how big...
Back to page topGreg, do you know how big hail has to be before it starts causing damage to cars, houses, etc?
(Mollee Francisco is a staff writer for the Chaska Herald. She can be reached at [email protected].)
Mollee, it depends on...
Back to page topMollee, it depends on several variables, including: wind speed, the density of the hail stones themselves, the strength/thickness of the item(s) being hit by the hail, etc. I have seen nickel-sized hail cause damage to vegetation, while quarter-sized hail can certainly leave some dings in a car roof or hood. And, as a youngster, I learned that golf-ball sized hail will leave a lump on your head!

Heavy rain on Wednesday......
Back to page topHeavy rain on Wednesday... You likely heard the clatter of rain drops hitting your roof and/or windows when you went to bed on Wednesday evening, as wave after wave of heavy downpours rolled through the Chaska area. Our official rainfall total from Wednesday was 1.72" but areas just to our west reported unofficial totals of up to 2 inches. It looks as though you can keep your lawn sprinklers tucked away for a while yet!

Back to page topI didn't hear the rain as I went to bed on Wednesday -- I watched it and the lightning through the windshield all across Wisconsin and into Minnesota as my husband and I drove home from Indiana.
OK, so I dozed a bit while he drove. All I can say is, thank goodness I splurged on those new tires before we left -- and thank goodness he was behind the wheel while I was securely belted into the passenger seat with a pillow against the window.
44 mph wind gust in Chaska!...
Back to page top44 mph wind gust in Chaska! A small storm "blew" by Chaska on Saturday night around 9:30 pm. We just missed a good rain, as most of the storm slid by just to our north. We did officially receive a "trace" of precipitation, along with some strong winds for a short period of time (the peak wind in Chaska was measured at 44 miles per hour). Some reports of tree damage were received from around the metro area. How did your yard fare?

Back to page topI see hints of the upper 80's (maybe even a shot at 90 degrees) in a little over a week or so, along with increasing levels of humidity. It looks like summer just might arrive on schedule after all!

Back to page topI'm so happy to see warm weather and sun again - I could cry. Keep it up, Mother Nature!

Almost half-an-inch of rain...
Back to page topAlmost half-an-inch of rain fell last weekend! On Friday and Saturday (June 27-28), Chaska received a welcome 0.48" of rain - along with a little wind. However, many lawns and gardens are still looking a little bit parched. With warmer temperatures in the forecast, let's hope for a few showers from time to time as well.
Hot and steamy on Sunday!...
Back to page topHot and steamy on Sunday! Did you spend any time outside on Sunday (July 6th)? If you did, you probablly noticed that it was warm and humid! Our high temperature hit 90 degrees in Chaska, along with a dew point temperature of 73 degrees! (the "dew point" is a measure of the amount of moisture in the air, when that number hits 60 you will begin to feel the increased humidity...when it passes 70 it feels "tropical" or oppressive. We had that on Sunday!). We have a good chance of receiving some rain later on Monday, which is good news for our lawns and gardens. But don't worry, you lovers of summer, for the heat will return by later in the week!
A nice rain on Monday night!...
Back to page topA nice rain on Monday night! We received 0.68" of rainfall overnight on Monday/Tuesday....a very welcome rainfall after a dry last half of June.
Be ready for more heat and humidity later in the week, along with a chance of thunder once again.
Didn't know the rain was...
Back to page topDidn't know the rain was coming last night and was sitting in a restaurant in Mendota when my husband said, "Wow, look outside."
My response: "Good thing I closed the sunroof before we came in."
If only my husband (who had been driving) had closed the windows!
At least we weren't on a motorcycle like the guy sitting next to us. And good thing we still had towels in the car from taking the dogs to the river.
A litle marble-sized hail...
Back to page topA litle marble-sized hail fell in Chaska last week, along with some much-needed rain (0.54" on the 10th and 0.60" on the 11th) and some wind (a peak gust of 38 mph). More rain and thunder are possible later this week....
The rain looked impressive...
Back to page topThe rain looked impressive on radar as it rolled into the Twin Cities on Thursday. However, most of the heaviest rain slid off just to our south. Officially we received 0.18" in Chaska, but much higher amounts fell fairly close to our area - I saw a report of 4.40" of rain near Waseca from Thursday morning!
Since River City Days are only a week away, it should be no surprise that higher temperatures are in the forecast once again for later next week. Enjoy the heat, for these are the days we long for in January!
Missed it by "that much".......
Back to page topMissed it by "that much".... Once again, a nice rain has passed us by. On Saturday afternoon, Chaska officially received just a trace of precipitation, while places as close to us as Glencoe tallied just over one inch of welcome rainfall. There is a slight chance of rain in our forecast over the next several days, along with temperatures in the middle 80's. So far things are looking pretty nice for River City Days!
River City Days are looking...
Back to page topRiver City Days are looking good! The forecast for this weekend is calling for low to mid 80's, and partly cloudy with only a slight chance of a shower after a little rain drifts through our area on Thursday and into Friday.
Wasn't that rain nice on...
Back to page topWasn't that rain nice on Friday morning? We received 1.25 welcome inches of rainfall in Chaska. The rest of the day was beautiful, which made for a great opening day for River City Days. Other than a slight chance of a shower, the rest of the weekend is looking equally nice!
Well, here comes the heat!!...
Back to page topWell, here comes the heat!! We sure enjoyed some beautiful weather for River City Days last weekend, with comfortable temperatures in the mid-80's, light winds, and no big storms. We also dodged a potential rain-out for Sunday's parade when a large amount of precipitation slid by just to our south, delivering over 2" of rain to nearby communities while we enjoyed the RCD Parade in dry comfort here in Chaska. And now here comes August, so get ready for the "Dog Days of Summer." By later this week we will be basking in the low to mid 90's and high humidity.
If you are a lover of the heat, be sure to enjoy it while you can. As a dose of reality, remember that we will be raking leaves in just a few short months! Now, where did I put that snow shovel...?
It's not so much that I love...
Back to page topIt's not so much that I love the heat, but it's sure a lot easier to roll out of bed in the morning, pull on some shorts and shoes and go walk the dogs than the routine I go through in cold and snowy months (think Ralphie's little brother in "A Christmas Story").
As for rakes and snow shovels? I don't know where yours are, but can I tell you where to put them?
Welcome rainfall on...
Back to page topWelcome rainfall on Thursday, and we dodged a "severe weather bullet" once again! On Thursday morning, Chaska received 0.51" of rainfall. The majority of the storm moved by just to our south, with winds in excess of 60 mph reported in the Le Sueur, Owatona, and Medford areas - along with many trees and powerlines down and some buildings/vehicles damaged. I guess we must be living right!
A dry week is coming. The...
Back to page topA dry week is coming. The 0.02" of rain we received on Sunday night may be the only rain we see for the next 5-7 days - so keep your sprinkler handy. The good news is that comfortable weather is on tap, with high temperatures around 80 and lower humidity. All in all, a very nice week is on the way!
A welcome rain on Friday!...
Back to page topA welcome rain on Friday! Officially we received 0.15" overnight, with 0.04" falling Friday evening and 0.11" coming early on Saturday morning. A short reprieve for your lawns and gardens - fortunately our cooler-than-normal temperatures have reduced the impact of our lack of rainfall this summer.
Wonderful rain on Tuesday...
Back to page topWonderful rain on Tuesday Aug 12! Chaska received 0.64" of very welcome rainfall on Tuesday, with 0.07" coming in the morning and 0.57" coming later in the afternoon. Unfortunately, this welcome rainfall was not wide-spread. While Chaska residents in the northern part of town were enjoying that much-needed half-inch afternoon rainfall, yards and gardens in southern Chaska received smaller amounts of rain. Still, being in the middle of a somewhat dry summer as we are, we'll take any rain that we can get. We do have a few more chances of hit-and-miss showers over the next few days. For now, however, the weekend is looking pretty nice!
One small rain shower moved...
Back to page topOne small rain shower moved over Chaska Tuesday evening, and gave us a quick 0.02" of moisture. Not enough to break our dry spell but a welcome rainfall for your garden non-the-less. We have a better chance of some rain coming up toward the end of the week, along with slightly lower temperatures. Enjoy the heat and humidity while you can, for autumn is just around the meteorological corner!
So where are we at on...
Back to page topSo where are we at on average rainfall this summer? I noticed sandbars in the Minnesota River at the Highway 41 bridge, which means it's been a pretty dry one.
You're right, the river is...
Back to page topYou're right, the river is noticeably lower, and many lawns and trees that have not been watered are looking dry. So far this year, we have received only about 60% of the rainfall we would normally expect to see - not a "killer drought" by any stretch, but definitely on the dry side of normal.
Here's a photo of the...
Back to page topHere's a photo of the Minnesota River showing the sandbars. I don't think supplies are gonna make it through via steamboat anytime soon.
