Scoreboard
The contestants have 122 songs to pick from for next week's R&B/Soul theme. You can check out the full list at iTunes, but here are a few of my suggestions for the Idols in the hopes that we don't have to endure another week of suckville song choices and performances.
Didi Benami - Didi is hard to pick for this week. Can she take on one of the two middle-of-the-road Mariah Carey songs cleared? Maybe Monica? I guess if she's staying to play, I'd push her towards Rihanna's "Umbrella" - she might be able to have some fun with that.
Crystal Bowersox - This is the week to go sans-guitar and have a bit of fun with something like "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone" or Chaka Khan's "Tell Me Something Good." Yes, they've both been done on Idol before, but I have no doubt Crystal would make either one her own.
Lee Dewyze - I'd like to think that Lee was clever enough to go all David Cook on R&B/Soul week and take a song like Vanessa Williams' "Save the Best for Last" and rock it out a la Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, but there are so few creative sorts in this year's competition and I'm not sure he has it in him. A more obvious choice to shake his stage jitters would be Wilson Pickett's "Mustang Sally." He's got the grit in his voice for it, he just needs to let go.
Andrew Garcia - Andrew Garcia could find some grip to stop his slide into oblivion if he picks a good song this week. In Hollywood, during the group number, he sounded great singing Alicia Keys' "No One." If he's truly desperate, he could do it again or he could tackle something like Michael Jackson's "Human Nature" (although it will be tough to erase the gooood memories of Matt Giraud's performance last season), Bobby Brown's "My Perrogative" or my number one choice for him: Brian McKnight's "Back at One."
Casey James - Casey may have been dubbed this season's rocker, but he can belt out some soul, too (see him take on "Closer" during group week). I can't find a better fit for him than a bit of Otis Redding though. I'd like to hear him on "I've Been Loving You Too Long." If he did that well, he'll have ladies lining up to buy his first cd. Bonus, it has some striking guitar bits to it so he wouldn't have to abandon his crutch instrument.
Aaron Kelly - I'd like to hear Aaron pick something like Jackson 5's "Who's Loving You?" or Boyz II Men's "On Bended Knee." But, if he's feeling like going for the Idol crown, Brook Benton's "Rainy Night in Georgia" could be a great choice for him. It's got a bit of country in it that wouldn't require Aaron to leave behind his bread and butter. Oh what heaven that would be.
Mike Lynche - Big Mike's biggest problem this week should be narrowing down the multitude of songs perfect for him. I think he needs to keep in touch with his sensitive side and go with something sappy like Joe's "I Wanna Know" or Boyz II Men's "A Song for Mama" (can you imagine the tears Kara would cry?!?). Ray Charles' "Georgia On My Mind" is another solid choice. If he wants to pleasantly surprise me, he'll go with Curtis Mayfield's "People Get Ready." That could provide the "moment" we've all been aching for this season.
Siobhan Magnus - Siobhan proved early on that she wasn't afraid to take on divalicious numbers like Aretha Franklin's "Think" so this week should be no big deal for her. What about The Supremes "You Keep Me Hangin' On" or Martha Reeves and the Vandellas "Heat Wave" or the disco version of "Knock on Wood"?
Katie Stevens - Like Andrew, Katie wowed during the group performance on "No One" so I wouldn't put it past her to fight for that to regain her footing in the competition. But if she wants to be Miss Urban Pop, she'll need to knock it out of the park this week with something great. I'm willing to let her take on Vanessa Williams' "Save the Best for Last" if she promised to sing it well. She might even think about Gladys Knight and The Pip's "Midnight Train to Georgia," but again, she better do it proud.
Tim Urban - I don't have any stellar suggestions for Tim Urban. I like the irony of him singing something like The Temptations "Ain't Too Proud to Beg" but perhaps a better fit would be something in the Smokey Robinson catalog such as "The Tears of a Clown" or The Four Tops "Baby I Need Your Lovin'".
TALK ABOUT IT: What do you think the contestants should sing? What songs should they avoid like the plague?
