American Idol: Worst season ever?

» Read similar stories filed under:

One of the elements I've loved about past seasons of American Idol is when a contestant introduces us to a song from his or her cache of personal favorites, one that has maybe existed on the fringes rather than on Top 40 radio - Taylor Hicks with Ray LaMontagne's "Trouble," Jason Castro with Jeff Buckley's "Hallelujah" or Adam Lambert with Gary Jules' "Mad World." What this season has been missing most is contestants with that confidence to bring us a song that speaks to them.
With the exception of Crystal Bowersox, the song choices made by this crop of contestants over the last several weeks has been largely uninspired. R&B/Soul night was really no exception. There were some incredible songs on the list the contestants could choose from and instead of something A-MAZ-ING like The Impressions' "People Get Ready," Otis Redding's "I've Been Loving You Too Long" or Brooke Benton's "Rainy Night in Georgia" we heard Bill Withers "Ain't No Sunshine" (again) and a dated version of Anita Baker's "Sweet Love."
Nine out of 10 (well 8 out of 10 after this week) of these kiddos really need to step it up and start getting creative out on that stage or this season is in danger of being dubbed the worst ever. And if that happens, Simon won't be the only one not returning next year.
Siobhan Magnus
Through the Fire
Looks like someone's caught a bad case of Notus Gloritis. A few weeks ago, Siobhan got her back patted over a well-placed screech and now we are apparently going to be subject to songs that make room for that yelp each time around. This week, Siobhan, dressed as though she had been mugged earlier in the night, took on Chaka Khan (crazy attracting crazy) with "Through the Fire." There were a dozen better choices for her in this theme week. Even if she wanted to stick with Chaka Khan a better choice might have been "Tell Me Something Good." This choice was middling and lackluster.
Casey James
Hold On, I'm Coming
Oh Casey, why does this song sound an awful lot like the Huey Lewis and the News number you did last week? And why are you smiling like a crazy blind person throughout this performance? Casey is a fine vocalist and a good looking guy, but his talents truly lie in the connection forged between his hands and that guitar.
Michael Lynche
Ready for Love
The groans continue as Mike takes the theme night that was handed to him on a silver platter and sends it flying across the room. The choices were endless for Big Mike tonight and he chose a mellow - arguably boring - India Arie song. <Insert buzzer sound here>
Didi Benami
What Becomes of the Brokenhearted
Between the dress, the shoes and the song I have to wonder, did Didi mix up which night she was slated to perform at the Lamelight Lounge with which night she was supposed to be competing on American Idol? This was no good and it only got worse at the end when things just got completely weird. And for crap's sake, Didi, if there is some reason you broke down in tears after singing this in front of Usher, tell us why. Babbling about how you powered through the performance is not an adequate substitution for a story that might have tugged on voters' heartstrings enough to get them to pick up the phone.
Tim Urban
Sweet Love
Let's be honest, none of us had high hopes for Tim Urban this week. I read a few blogs that had song suggestions for the contestants and, time and time again, when it came to giving Tim an idea, bloggers came up blank. So what did he do? Further solidified his chances to end up as the de facto choice for tween movie producers that can't afford Zac Efron. This was no "Sweet Love" Tim was giving us tonight. I remain convinced that he has that True Blood vampire quality to be able to glamor people and thus the reason why he is in the contest today and was ever given a golden ticket to Hollywood in the first place.
Andrew Garcia
Forever
Thank goodness Andrew stopped listening to the judges "advice" for him (even though it garnered him nothing but harsh critiques) and went back to what felt right. He likes to strip down songs and play his guitar - so do it Andrew. It might not always work like "Straight Up" did, but sooner or later you're bound to stumble upon another number that delights and then maybe you can figure out a pattern for what works and what doesn't. Nice to see Andrew having fun and smiling and getting rewarded for it with good comments for a change. By far, the most contemporary sounding song of the night.
Katie Stevens
Chain of Fools
Cool hair, crapulous outfit. I sense that Katie was hoping to perform Aretha Franklin's "Chain of Fools" with the requisite sass and swagger but it fell short for me. I could almost see her counting "one, two, head snap, one, two, head snap" as she sang. Too paint by numbers for me and not enough swagger. There was more sass in those horrible black lacy leggings than in her actual performance, but not for lack of trying. She's just too young to get the song and feel it as she sings it.
Lee Dewyze
Treat Her Like A Lady
Oh how I was hoping for "Mustang Sally." Alas, it was hard to get over my disappointment in not hearing Lee tackle the PERFECT song to really enjoy "Treat Her Like A Lady." Blah, blah, blah, it had energy. Blah, blah, blah he sang it fine. Blah, blah, blah, next time do "Mustang Sally."
Crystal Bowersox
Midnight Train to Georgia
Best song choice of the night by a billion and three miles. I liked seeing a softer side to Crystal with the dress and the piano. The vocal was really lovely and at times brilliant. She remains head and shoulders above the competition and the sole reason to tune in week after week.
Aaron Kelly
Ain't No Sunshine
More disappointment as Aaron Kelly performs the same song that Kris Allen dazzled audiences with last year. Don't get me wrong, he sang it fine and he's showing great consistency, but there were plenty of other songs on the list that Aaron could have sang fine without competing with the memory of Kris Allen. For not finding one of those and trying it, he loses points in my book.

Best performance of the night: Crystal Bowersox (no competition)

Most likely to go home: Didi Benami

Another of the anointed ladies leaves the bunch tonight. Katie? Alas, no. Instead we say goodbye to Didi Benami (there was no chance Captain Smileypants Urban was going home).

Signs of growing audience disinterest? For the second week in a row, only three songs featured on Idol made it onto the list of iTunes Top Songs:

#42 Chris Brown - Forever (Andrew Garcia)
#131 India.Arie - Ready for Love (Michael Lynche)
#153 Bill Withers - Ain't No Sunshine (Aaron Kelly)
