American Idol: Night and Day

In the final competition of the season, Adam and Kris squared off with their clear differences evident for all to see. Adam is shiny and flashy like Las Vegas. Kris is mellow and laid back like Savannah. So who you vote for will probably depend on your musical tastes (though some have shamefully dared to give Adam and Kris liberal and conservative labels).
For me, Adam is the best performer this competition has seen in quite some time. His background in musical theater has no doubt served him well in finding a second home on the stage.

American Idol: To be determined

I'd like to think that we are now just one week away from the crowning of American Idol Season Eight champ Adam Lambert. Such an assured outcome we surely haven't seen since Fantasia dominated Season Three. But lest we forget how the fantabulous Melinda Doolittle was robbed of the chance to claim her crown in Season Six.

American Idol: Some rock, others should be pelted with rocks

Rock night provides the first ever Led Zeppelin song on Idol. Who would have thunk it? In the past, Idols haven't veered too far from mainstream modern rock, but some of tonight's contestants were full of delightful surprises, diving deep into the classic rock canon.
And yet others should have given their songs a major reworking to make them fit into their style .

American Idol: Nothing "standard" about that

Amazing how seven and a half minutes of singing (five contestants at 90 seconds a pop) can take up one hour of TV time. Maybe if the judges had a comment time limit, we could enjoy more than one song when there are only five contestants left.

Tonight is one night I would have LOVED to hear the Idols sing two songs. After all, there were no real big duds on Rat Pack night. Two songs might have shook down the pack a bit.

I have a feeling it's going to be a close vote this week with no one to really throw to the wolves. Drama could be the name of the game on results night.

American Idol: Disco in drag

The dreaded disco night. It's the kind of theme that quickly levels the playing field.
In the past, disco night has come early in the season, weeding out the weak and shaking the confidences of the strong. The appearance so late in the game is the ultimate test of the contestants' skills.
At this point in the competition, disco night requires creativity. No one wants to hear "Stayin' Alive" or "I Will Survive" trotted out for the billionth time. We want to see songs reinvented, reinvigorated, reworked.

American Idol: Cinematastic!

Bryan Adams isn't the only artist to ever record a song for the movies, but you might think he was based on two of the remaining seven Idol contestants covering his songs.

American Idol: A star is born

Is this really even a contest anymore? In my mind, we could easily fast forward this season several weeks until there are maybe three people left in this competition: Adam, Allison and either Matt or Kris. The others? Well they're really just biding their time until they get their tickets home.

American Idol: Download this - or don't - who cares?!?

» Read similar stories filed under:

A theme like "Top Downloads" seems pretty ambiguous - especially after highly structured weeks like "Michael Jackson" and "Motown". Guess the contestants found it just as confusing. Their song choices were all over the place- from an R&B dance floor filler and a disco throwback to a pop hit and a piano ballad.

Presumably, they chose songs in the vein of music they would like to record, leaving a few winners and plenty of losers. How many of these performances would you have downloaded on iTunes?

American Idol: Hit-and-Missville, U.S.A.

Some nights it seems like the judges are sitting back, throwing out "good, but not great" comments to the early contestants waiting to be "blown away" by those who close will the show. Tonight was one of those nights.
Granted, we didn't see an extraordinary range of Motown tunes this evening - everyone stuck close to the Motown mainstays - but I find it hard to believe that in a random drawing of placement Adam, Danny and Allison all lucked out.

American Idol: Jesus, PLEASE take the freaking wheel and steer us into next week already

Like Simon, country music is not my cup of tea. So I came into "Songs Made Popular by Members of the Grand Ole Opry" night with great trepidation.

Country music week is usually one of the toughest weeks of the season and this year it comes so early on in the game. Would the weak rise? Would the confident falter? Would anyone pick a song I like?

American Idol: Facing the King of Pop

Talk about a daunting task. First time on the big stage with a big audience and you're staring down Michael Jackson's catalog. This wasn't a task for the faint of heart. What song do you pick? Do you sing it straight or change it up? It was clear from the beginning that this challenge would test the contestants mettle.

American Idol: Top 36 Part 2: Snoozefest

Anyone tuning into American Idol for the first time ever Wednesday night will likely never tune back in. The second group competing for spots in the Top 12 offered us bad singing and horrible song choices.

Not everyone disappointed, but in some cases the commercials were more interesting than what was happening between them. Here's hoping next week's crew learns a lesson from last night or Idol's viewership may take a hit.

American Idol: Top 36, Part 1: Welcome to the dance

» Read similar stories filed under:

Talk about pressure - one night to wow America and convince them you are a must-have for the Top 12. American Idol hasn't worked this format since its early years and frankly, it makes me nervous. There are so many good singers to worry about now, rather than fixating on bad singers that need to go.

American Idol: Antics out, sob stories in

» Read similar stories filed under:

The cheerleaders, the screamers, the back-flippers - it seems we've seen it all when it comes to the antics of some of the delusional people that audition for American Idol. Sure, sure, there are those previews of upcoming audition scenes where a man dressed in a giant bunny costume picks Simon up, but overall the magic of bad auditions could finally be losing its appeal.

American Idol: Four's a crowd?

» Read similar stories filed under:

Season eight of the wildly popular American Idol began last night and as per usual, the show kicked off with a slew of both bad and bizarre auditions - this time from Phoenix, Arizona.

With it came the introduction of a fourth American Idol judge, Kara Dioguardi. The songstress took her place between Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson and wasted no time getting down to business.
