Scoreboard

Now that American Idol's meanest and nicest judges have left, loyal watchers have to be wondering who the heck might be sitting at the judges' table for Season 10.
Most of us had just got used to the idea of no Simon Cowell next year when along comes funny lady Ellen Degeneres statement last night confirming that she, too, was bowing out from the reality TV powerhouse.
So what happens next? We can't honestly be expected to endure the likes of Randy "Dawg" Jackson and Kara "Cougartown" DioGuardi alone, can we?
Rumor has it that there could be BIG changes in store for the whole table. With original executive producer Nigel Lythgoe reportedly back on board, some have been speculating that only Jackson (who has a contract good through next season) will remain to judge the Idol hopefuls. (DioGuardi has a year-to-year contract that has yet to be renewed.)
Many names have been floated around to fill the table. Shortly after news of Degeneres departure had made the rounds, a new report surfaced that Jennifer Lopez had already inked a deal to join up. That has yet to be confirmed as has whether there will be four judges at the table or just three.
Former Poison-frontman Bret Michaels has been at the forefront of celebrities practically begging for a chance to sit and sip out of a plastic Coca Cola glass, while Elton John leads the list of tight-lipped notables with the right credentials and demeanor to fill Cowell's big shoes.
Here are just some of the names floated around as potential judges and my thoughts on each of them:
Bret Michaels - Like it or not, I can't seem to avoid any reality show Micheals' is on, be it Rock of Love or Celebrity Apprentice. He's a genuinely likable guy who's baby blues I don't mind gazing at for hours on end in any given week. Plus, he's done the judging thing before on Nashville Star. And he knows all about super stardom. If we can keep him from showing contestants the "Tour Bus Thrust," I think he could be a winner.
Justin Timberlake - As a cowboy-hat-wearing 11-year-old, Timberlake took to the Star Search stage in hopes of forging a music career so clearly the former N'Syncer knows what the contestants are going through. And he knows what's potentially ahead of them. It would be a real coup for Idol to land a youthful superstar like Timberlake, but I wonder if he's got it in him to crush dreams by keeping it real or if he would revert to his comedic bits to fill the awkward space.
Usher - No. He barely removed his sunglasses for two seconds when he took his mentoring turn. I'm not going to stare at that all season long.
Elton John - If anyone could fill Cowell's cranky shoes, it's Elton John. But John's appeal would probably be limited to the show's older demographic and I have a feeling producers are hoping to build back up that youthful audience contingent with their cell phones at the ready.
Bette Midler - I love the idea of the Divine Miss M knocking the cocky out of the contestants. It would be great to see a strong, knowledgable woman like Midler on the panel - someone who doesn't have to be nice to try to win fans. My concern is that like John, her appeal is limited more to baby boomers.
Chris Isaak - No. We don't need him or his wicked games.
Jennifer Lopez - Lopez is an admitted fan of the show, but so was Degeneres. Being a celebrity and being a fan is not enough in my book to earn a seat on the judge's panel. However, she's been a mentor on the show before and wasn't too terrible. Still I think there are better choices out there.
Donald Trump - He already has the "Apprentice" franchise. That's enough.
Jessica Simpson - Are we trying for Paula Abdul v. 2.0?
Harry Connick, Jr. - I don't hate this idea. He was the most personable and involved of any mentor in Season 9 and seemed to genuinely enjoy working with the contestants.
Shania Twain - Everyone seems to think that she was not only an amazing celebrity judge during the auditions, but also a great mentor. I disagree. I think she came off like a hungry cougar and frankly, I was frightened for some of the contestants' safety.
So what do you think? Who should get the gig? Should producers clean house and start fresh at the judges' table? And should Idol keep the four judge format or return to a trio?

Back to page topI've never regarded Aerosmith front-man Steven Tyler as being particularly coherent. With one incoherent judge already on the panel (I'm talking about you, Dawg) will that leave J. Lo to carry the burden of intelligible constructive criticism? Scary.

What if Idol changed the...
Back to page topWhat if Idol changed the judging panel each season? I've been tossing the idea around and the more I think about it, the more I like it. Here's why:
* It would up the chances of getting a megastar like Justin Timberlake or an Elton John because the committment would be limited to one season.
* Likewise, if a judge stunk, you'd only have to live with him or her for one go-round.
* Judges would be less likely to run out of compliments, metaphors, disses over one season compared to nine (let's face it, we'd all heard Simon Cowell's cruise ship/lounge act/wedding singer comparisons more times than really necessary)
* Similar to Dancing With The Stars, Idol could create off-season buzz by announcing the celebrity judging cast.
* With all the famous faces dying to judge Idol, there should be no need for big payouts. If someone is demanding too much money to be a judge, you move on to the next willing body.

Back to page topI like your idea about rotating judges in and out so as to not only increase the interest in watching but also to keep things new and fresh. Plus, I know a lot of people would have liked to boot Paula after a season (though, many of those people are probably wishing she was still around now).
Here's my question to you, as my favorite "American Idol" die hard: Who would you like to see, alive or dead, money and fame are no objects, sitting at the hosting table? Who's your dream team?
For the record, I never realized how important the judges were to the success of the show. I always thought people tuned in at first for the schadenfreude of seeing really awful singers and then for the really good musical performances in the season's latter half. But, the judges (and Ryan Seacrest, lovable Ryan Seacrest) are the only elements that are consistent between seasons. I never realized how much people loved the judges and how tied they were to their presences, especially considering that the judges don't even get to vote (and many of the viewers don't vote according to the judges comments).
That's a tough question,...
Back to page topThat's a tough question, merynfluker. My criteria would probably include coherence (ruling out a good 70 percent of those up for the gig already) credentials and showmanship. Basically, my dream team would need to have already exhibited great musical talent or have a proven eye/ear for musical talent PLUS the ability to form sentences that the contestants and the general public can understand. A tall order, I know.
I've been intrigued by Bret Michaels' interest in the gig from the get-go. As someone who has attended (and enjoyed) a Poison show in the past as well as someone who will admit that she watched (and enjoyed) Rock of Love, Rock of Love 2 (but not Rock of Love Bus - eww) and Celebrity Apprentice, I'm pretty impressed that Bret has managed to eak out a second round of fame more than 20 years after his first brush with it.
He's got the music credentials as the frontman of one of the 80s most enduring hair bands. Plus he's already done a judging gig on Nashville Star. As an added bonus, he comes across as likable on TV whether he's producing an ad campaign for deodorant, watching women mudwrestle for a date with him or flirting with anything in a skirt (behavior I'm sure would have to be tamed somewhat with Idol now allowing 15-year-olds to audition.) I'd give him a shot on the panel.
For that second slot, I like the idea of filling it with a strong, outspoken woman. Bette Midler is a great choice. The Divine Miss M has enjoyed a long career in music and movies. Who better to give these kids advice about how to not only make it, but keep it going beyond that first album? Barbra Streisand or Tina Turner could also fill this role with ease.
Finally, I couldn't help but sit a Brit in that last chair. Elton John or Sir Paul McCartney would be A-MA-ZING choices. Could you imagine the nerves of the contestants performing Beatles tunes for a Beatle? Or the television gold a bad critique from Elton John would be???
