Restaurant eyeing Chestnut building

» Read similar stories filed under:

The details are scarce so far, but according to City Administrator Matt Podhradsky, interest has been expressed in locating a new restaurant in the empty space at the northwest corner of Highway 41 and Second Street. The building was last occupied by Mi Casa.

The banquet space, in the lower level of the building, has recently been taken over by Grand Palms Event Center.

TELL US: What kind of restaurant would you like to see in this space?

Restaurant: Texas Roadhouse or Famous Dave's.
Fast Food: Taco John's! (Yes I know there is one in Shakopee, but it's too far.) :)

Texas Roadhouse is an interesting choice, abickford. My sister, who lives in the Twin Ports, loves the one in Duluth. Looks like the only other one in Minnesota is located in Coon Rapids.

I think we have enough pizza places in Chaska and the surrounding areas. We need something different, something that will bring people into town....like an Olive Garden! The closest one is in Bloomington; they have a great menu with a nice variety of choices, wonderful food and excellent prices. Everyone knows the name and they seem to have a great reputation...I believe they'd do well here. The unfortunate thing about that location is parking; there isn't a lot of it available and people don't want to have to walk so far to get into the restaurant, especially during our cold winters.

Pizza Ranch might do better than you think. Many of the towns between where my in-laws live in South Dakota and Chaska have a Pizza Ranch. They keep pretty busy.

I would guess that whatever is actually going in there likely isn't a franchise/chain. The parking situation, the layout of the restaurant, and the fact that it's not free-standing isn't conducive to a lot of concepts out there.

I think an IHOP would work very well. They too are always busy. We do not go to IHOP often, but when we do go we usually have to wait for a table. An IHOP could be a great asset for downtown Chaska.

The more I think about the IHOP option, I think it could work very well in downtown Chaska. The breakfast idea is not overdone in downtown Chaska and the prices are in line with what many in Chaska are willing to pay. Seems like a good fit too me. Check out these IHOP photographs:

Something that will not hurt local business but one that can stay open because they understand Chaska and it's people. I would love to see another Mexican restaurant give it a go. Love Chips & Salsa to start. I do love the breakfast idea. There really isn't anywhere for bfast beside Perkins around here that is that IHOP OPH feel. Don't get me wrong I love Perkins bfast but I think I over dosed. Yes Olive Garden and Red Lobster would be fun but I don't think DT is the place for them. I wonder how well an Italian restaurant would do. Like Olive Garden meats Bucca. Something like that. Whatever does open I wish them the best and hope they listen to the people Chaska and not their egos.

Don't!In the last five years, name the independent restaurants that have actually made it downtown.

1.) Be sufficiently capitalized.

2.) You need to have a marketing and promotion plan in place before the doors open. Word-of-mouth isn't good enough.

3.) Make sure the price is right. Some of the recent restaurant failures have tried to charge a premium for food that wasn't good enough to merit it.

4.) You don't get a second chance to make a first impression. People in Chaska flock to new restaurants. If you disappoint your customers on that first visit, you're going to lose a number of them permanently.

"Chaska My Love" has been downtown for several years. They have good mexican food at a fair price. I think that is the key, good food at a fair price. If you have not given then a try, I think you should. The China Pagoda has also been around for many years. "Mix" was simply too expensive, the concept was good but I think they tried to re-coop all expenses in the first year, they were just unaffordable.

Restaurant speculation is over. Signs up at the former Mi Casa site announce the November 2010 arrival of La Quebrada, offering authentic Mexican cuisine.
