American Idol: Snooze-o-rama

» Read similar stories filed under:

For once, we get an Idol episode devoted almost solely to the singing and the girls - for the most part - fail to take advantage. Although there were some solid performances, there was nothing that gave goosebumps or was fodder for chit-chat around the water cooler. Maybe the boys will provide more interesting performances tomorrow night. Until then...

Katie Stevens

Breakaway
Katie decides to change things up tonight by apparently smoking a few cartons of Marlboros before her performance. She sang the first verse of Kelly Clarkson's "Breakaway" with some weird husky voice that veered in and out of tune. And though she opened up on the chorus,
overall Katie's performances tend to lack personality. That was the problem tonight and will continue to be the problem until she figures out who she is or at least, who she wants to be.

Siobhan Magnus

House of the Rising Sun
Siobohn sang The Animals' "House of the Rising Sun" in tribute to her musical father whose the "best singer she's ever known". She's just quirky enough to pull off this tune. The musical accompaniment was simple it allowed her big voice to shine through. She is truly captivating on the stage and quickly marking herself as the one to watch.

Lacey Brown
The Story
Great song choice for Lacey this week. She was a little over the top playing the shy coquette sitting on the edge of the stage, but the song fit her voice amazingly well and she exhibited great vocal control. She needs to start picking more songs like this that aren't so mainstream and allow her room to play.

Katelyn Epperly
I Feel the Earth Move
Katelyn reaches to a fellow curly-haired blonde for inspiration this week singing Carole King's "I Feel the Earth Move." Unfortunately, she was the only one. This wasn't nearly as good as last week's real stunner. This song is hard to sing without sounding dated and Katelyn didn't do anything to bring the song into this century.

Didi Benami
Rhiannon
Interesting take on Fleetwood Mac's "Rhiannon." (Not Rhianna like I originally though) I liked the surprise of Didi giving it the indie treatment. She was probably on the chopping block for this week and is definitely playing to stay. She just might with that.

Paige Miles

Smile
How I wish Paige would have watched Jermaine Jackson's rendition of this song from Michael Jackson's memorial service before she went out tonight. To me, that was the showstopper she needed to deliver. Instead, this was a disaster. She said she was emotional but that didn't come across on the stage. And what was with that crap arrangement that got weird halfway through and derailed everything? Yikes.

Crystal Bowersox

Give Me One Reason
What a joy Crystal is. Who are we kidding? This girl is already an artist. She is so clear in who she is and what kind of music she wants to produce. Idol really is lucky to have her in this season. Another great performance for Crystal. She is a shoo-in for the Top 12 if not the finals.

Lilly Scott

I Fall To Pieces
Lilly Scott gives us a Patsy-Cline-goes-to-Hawaii number with "I Fall to Pieces." She appeared to have to remind herself a few times to sing her version and not Patsy Cline's but overall it worked for her. Not her best performance, but should be enough to get her through to next week.

Best performances of the night: Lacey Brown, Didi Benami, Crystal Bowersox

Most likely to go home: Paige Miles, Katie Stevens

Despite botching "Smile," Paige Miles beats out Katelyn Epperly to make it into the Top 12 along with Didi Benami and Siobhan Magnus. Sorry to see Katelyn go after her brilliant performance of "The Scientist" last week.

Terrible tragedy on the girl's side as Lilly Scott gets sent home while Katie "pageant princess" Stevens joins the Top 12 along with Crystal Bowersox and Lacey Brown. Here's hoping Lilly is signed quickly because that's an album I'm ready to buy.
