Let's Go!
Scoreboard
Could a Rolling Stones-themed Idol night be as huge as when the Beatles catalog was finally made available to the contestants? Answer: No. Not even close.
But I'm sure for many of the contestants it was a tall hurdle to jump to get one step closer to the Top 10 and a place in the summer tour.
So how did they do? Let's take a look:
Michael Lynche
Miss You
Oh crap. We get our first image of Michael as a dad. That baby is darn cute. Watch out for the cute baby vote!!!
Though Michael has tried to overcome his cheeseball roots in this competition, the band's arrangement of "Miss You" didn't help him this week. It was all a bit over the top with exaggerated grunts and awkward leg kicks. Yes, Mick Jagger is the quintessential "over-the-top" performer but it didn't work for Michael. The Stones catalog doesn't provide the greatest material for Michael's style. He's better crooning R&B and Soul music.
Didi Benami
Playing with Fire
Looks like Didi lives in some craphole apartment in LA complete with cinderblock walls. Talk about a sob story. Those white walls would be enough to drive anyone stark-raving mad.
Didi's airy voice works well on this song and for me, this arrangement is more pleasing than the original. Looked like Didi forgot some of the lyrics on the second verse but she held herself together OK. She can't hit those glory notes with the same pizzazz of some of the other contestants so she should stick to her lower register. That's what I want to hear more of.
Casey James
It's All Over Now
Casey's mom wears a necklace with his likeness and a t-shirt with his name on it. Wonder how his siblings feel about that. Favoritism!
Casey goes honky tonk with his guitar and "It's All Over Now.?" It comes off like a really good bar performance. The guitar playing was pretty cool though - first with the one hand strumming and then the riffs at the end. When Casey puts the attention on his guitar playing like he did tonight, it seems to overshadow his singing every time.
Lacey Brown
Ruby Tuesday
Not sure what she's wearing (looks like she borrowed something from Siobhan's closet tonight) but she sounds good on the opening notes of "Ruby Tuesday." Like Didi, her voice is an interesting match to the Stones' songs. I could have done without the awkward yet zippy treatment of the "still I'm gonna miss you" line. Thought she really started to shine when she pulled out the stops toward the end. Would have liked more of that throughout.
Andrew Garcia
Gimme Shelter
Andrew's dad thought he was going to be a custodian when he grew up. What about Andrew's mom? We may never know. She didn't seem like much of a talker. She may not even have been real. I'm not entirely sure.
So this is the first time in a long time that we see Andrew without the guitar and he looks horribly
uncomfortable without it. The Stones don't seem to be a good fit for him.
He's taken the judges' advice and abandoned his stripped-down-song routine. That seemed like a mistake for him. To me, this was not a better performance than some of his previous. Andrew didn't seem to be able to get into it and started to look more like the ousted Alex Lambert sulking around the stage than the Andrew I-know-who-I-am-and-what-kind-of-record-I-want-to-record of the past.
Katie Stevens
Wild Horses
Katie wants to put the little known state of Connecticut on the map. Good luck with that, Katie. If state heroine Prudence Crandall can't do it, no one can (thank you, Wikipedia).
So Katie chooses what any teenage diva would - the obvious "Wild Horses" - most likely based on Susan Boyle covering it rather than it being a Stones song that spoke to her. She gets the spotlight treatment which only succeeds in showing us spittle flying out of her mouth. Lovely.
Overall, the song is boring and Katie does nothing to spice it up. She would have been better off taking a risk and challenging herself with something else from the Stones catalog that might have given her that "moment" Simon's looking for.

Tim Urban
Under My Thumb
Thanks to Tim's family package we now know that he comes from a family prone bad haircuts. At least he comes by it naturally.
Tonight Tim gives us the Rolling Stones go to Jamaica. This is a true WTH moment. Sure, sure, sure, he gets credit for trying be creative. But he also gets penalties for ruining what could have been a fun song. This is why Jason Mraz hasn't covered this song. It's a bad idea.
Siobhan Magnus
Paint It, Black
Cool red stairs for one of the real standout songs in the Stones' catalog. Wonder how many fellow contestants Siobhan had to fight for this one. At least she did not disappoint. This performance had it all - lights, action, wailing.
Let's be honest. Siobhan is kinda weird. She's not your traditional polished crank-em-out-of-the-Mickey-Mouse-Club performer. But she can sing and she's downright intriguing. You just never know what you're gonna get when she takes the stage. So I have no doubt she will be gracing that stage for quite awhile. And we can all be glad. I mean, look at the end of that song. It was stunning. Worth the price of admission alone.
Lee Dewyze
Beast of Burden
Tonight, Lee made "Beast of Burden" look easy. That song seemed to flow right out of him - out of his mouth and out of his fingertips. I thought this was a great arrangement from start to finish. It sounded totally fresh and radio-worthy. I think this was his best performance to date.
Paige Miles
Honky Tonk Woman
Paige is a woman on borrowed time. No doubt she can't stumble right now or she's certain to be on the chopping block. And despite a bad case of laryngitis she manages to hit some big notes on "Honky Tonk Woman." She's much more appealing in her middle register. When she blows, she's got a good voice. The lower register gave her some trouble tonight. It might have been the laryngitis but when she went low it was about as appealing as that strange tights - shorts combo she was wearing. She seemed to be having a good time strutting on the stage though.
Aaron Kelly
Angie
Great song choice for him. He seemed to really connect with it and looked like a mature singer out there tonight. Love what the stylists did to him as well. That makeover seemed to give him the confidence he needed on the big stage. His best performance to date.
Crystal Bowersox
You Can't Always Get What You Want
But you can always get a good performance from Crystal. She joins the ranks of Fantasia Barrino, Melinda Doolittle and Adam Lambert in being just straight-up consistent. You know she's going to deliver week after week, it's just a question of whether she'll be good or whether she'll be great. This wasn't great, but she does seem to be branching out from the Idol parameters to show who she really is. Slowly but surely, we should have the complete Crystal package by season's end. That should be great.
Most likely to go home: Tim Urban

Back to page topI hope my two (accidental) votes for Paige Miles weren't the difference between her staying and going (I meant to vote for Lee but had counted wrong). Instead, the lilting Lacey Brown heads home, the first to be kicked out of the Top 12.

Back to page topCheck that - looks like the "Teen Idols" theme has now become "Billboard No. 1s." Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that eerily similar to what we slogged through during the semifinals?

Back to page topAnd who better to "mentor" the American Idol contestants on how to tackle the "Teen Idol" songbook than Miley Cyrus?!? US Weekly is reporting that Miley will be on hand Tuesday to guide the contestants to success. Can a Wednesday night performance by Hannah Montana herself be far behind???
