The Chaska City Council voted unanimously to order the North Meadows street reconstruction project scheduled for to begin this summer.
The $1.5 million project will include the reconstruction of several streets in the North Meadows neighborhood as well as upgrades to the sanitary sewer and water systems.
City Engineer Bill Monk told the council that the street work should last “a good 50-60 years.”
Monk noted that as part of the project up to six trees may have to be removed and the road may be slightly narrowed.

The Jonathan Association will not have an election again this year. Only two association members indicated an interest in the three open board seats at the annual meeting Thursday night.
Jim Battenberg, of Neighborhood Eight, will return to his seat on the board. He will be joined by David Snodgrass, of Clover Ridge. Both men were approved by the board's nominating committee Thursday.
Jonathan Association President Nate Bostrom said that the board will continue to look for someone to fill the remaining open seat.

On a warm June day in 1961, 21 men gathered in the auditorium at Guardian Angels Catholic Church for the opening meeting of the Chaska Rotary.
Dr. Thomas Sutcliffe was among those founding members.
“It was a warm month, there was no air conditioning there,” he recalled. “And all the women were dressed to the nines.”
Nearly five decades later, Sutcliffe is the sole holdout from that group to remain a member of the rotary.
“We had a high drop out rate that first year,” he said. “We got down to 12 members.”

Director Bill Coldwell cast Megan Tornquist as the Narrator in the current Chaska Valley Family Theatre musical “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” in part, because “What you see on stage isn’t a result of anything I did directing her. It’s her natural ability to tell a story in a fun, easy-going manner.”
Theater-goers may recognize her as “Maria” from CVFT’s “The Sound of Music” from a couple seasons ago. Tornquist, 25, lives in Chaska with husband, Pete, and teaches at East Union Elementary School.

Before forging ahead with a state bonding bill, Gov. Tim Pawlenty this week urged legislators to come to grips with $1.2 billion budget deficit.
In his budget plan, outlined last week, Pawlenty would fill the deficit hole by making cuts in state aid to local units of government, to the health and human services budget, and to state agencies and other programs. It also relies on money from the federal government.
A proposed house move is causing quite a stir on Schneider Court in the Clover Ridge neighborhood.
Ronald Olson is the owner of a smoke-damaged single family home he hopes to move to a vacant lot on Schneider Court. Last week, the Chaska Planning Commission recommended approval of a conditional use permit to move the structure, but several neighbors are hoping the City Council will vote against it.
The item was originally on the council’s Feb. 22 agenda, but was tabled until the March 1 meeting.

Cooper’s County Market won’t become a Cub Foods, according to owner Gary Cooper.
Last April, the Herald reported that Cub representatives had made an offer, which grocers Gary and his wife Sandy Cooper thought was “reasonable.”
In the article, Gary Cooper said Cub would tear down the existing Cooper’s store, and build a new Cub. However, Cub went on to make a “180-degree turn,” he said.

Snow and frigid temperatures have combined to make some shallow lakes susceptible to winterkill conditions, prompting the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to open them to liberalized fishing.
Lakes opened to liberalized fishing in the West Metro Fisheries Management Area include Rice Marsh Lake in Chanhassen and Rutz Lake, west of Waconia, according to a DNR press release.

District 112 has denied most requests for transfers to Chanhassen High School for next school year in order to maintain student enrollment balance between Chanhassen and Chaska High Schools.
There were 91 total transfer requests to Chanhassen, either from residents within the Chaska High School boundary, or from open enrollment requests outside District 112.
With one eye on the sky and one on the state’s rivers, flood forecasters are on the lookout for a messy spring.
“A wet fall and heavy winter snow indicate a potential for flooding in the Twin Cities and across Minnesota,” stated a press release from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety.
With the bulk of this year's expectations sitting squarely on the shoulders of the Top 12 women (who are rumored to be harboring a winner), the guys can relax and enjoy the best seats in the house right? Looks like that's the plan for most of the men who almost seem resigned to seeing a woman take the crown this year. Shame. Shame. Shame.
