Amateur baseball: Shakopee scores season sweep of Cubs

Shakopee made it a regular-season sweep over the Chaska Cubs with a 5-4 victory Thursday night at Athletic Park.

The Cubs had ace righthander Ryan Seifert going great guns, but the Indians made the most of their five hits in the game.

The Cubs scored in the first inning, but that was all Shakopee lefty Tim Piechowski allowed over eight innings.

This holiday weekend will be full of patriotic fun and events on Saturday. 

The Jonathan Association homeowners group will kick off its Fourth of July Saturday morning with a 5K fun run/walk on Jonathan trails, with registration at 8 a.m. and the run kicking off at 8:30 a.m.

The Chaska Lodge celebrated its 2nd anniversary on June 16. The Chaska Community Center addition, completed in 2007, provides activities and a gathering space for ages 55 and older, referred to as Active Older Adults. The evening began with a Volunteer Appreciation reception for 50 individuals who donate their time and talents at The Lodge. Cubs reach Spamtown Final Four

Chaska had an extended weekend of amateur baseball at the Spamtown Classic tournament in Austin.

The Cubs took two of the three pool-play games to make the final four.

The Cubs beat the Omaha, Neb. Diamond Spirit 6-3 on Friday night.

Chaska then knocked off the Peekskill, N.Y. Tides 8-5 on Saturday afternoon. The Cubs then fell 12-4 to the Blaine Fusion on Saturday evening.

The Cubs won the four-team pool play, as Blaine fell 13-3 to Omaha and 4-3 to Peekskill.

Chaska was thumped 11-1 by the Chicago Vee Pak Hawks in the semifinals on Sunday.

The event starts at 7 p.m. at the Victoria Bar and Grill (formerly Schmitty's Tavern) at 7900 Quamoclit, Victoria.

They mark the beginning of Chaska’s “summer of golf.”

Last week, Public Works crews hung 50 banners throughout the city, promoting the upcoming 91st PGA Championship at Hazeltine National Golf Club, Aug. 10-16.

The Chaska Lions Club has organized and financed the banner project for all the major Chaska golf tournaments in the last 18 years: the 1991 U.S. Open; the 2002 PGA Championship; and the 2006 U.S. Amateur Championship.

'Sing, Sing, Sing' at downtown band concert

The Minnesota Valley Community Band (MVCB) performs at 7 p.m., Friday, June 26, at the gazebo in City Square Park in downtown Chaska.

Concert highlights include music of George Gershwin (“Porgy and Bess”), John Phillip Sousa (“Stars and Stripes Forever”); and, in honor of the Benny Goodman centennial, a medley (“Let’s Dance,” “Stompin’ at the Savoy,” “Moonglow,” and “Sing, Sing, Sing”).

Nominations taken for outstanding senior citizens

Nominations from county residents are now being sought for the 2009 Outstanding Senior Citizens of Carver County. 

Candidates for the award are Carver County residents over the age of 65 that are known for going out of their way to help others, to volunteer, to organize, or help out with volunteer services, according to a press release.  

The award recognizes outstanding community service and serves as an example to others in the county. The winner will be honored at the Carver County Fair in the Entertainment Center on Thursday, Aug. 6 at 1 p.m.

Yep, it's less than two months away -- the 91st Annual PGA Tournament at Hazeltine National Golf Club. Mark Steinbauer (left) and Greg Wickenhauser, with Chaska Public Works, help get the city ready by installing PGA banners along Highway 41 in downtown Chaska, including this one at the southwest corner of City Square Park.
