Doodle 4 Google

By Chuck Friedbauer

Pioneer Ridge Freshman Center student Rebecca Olene has been selected as a “Doodle 4 Google” regional winner.

Her artwork was selected as one of the 40 best entries in the country from a pool of thousands of submissions. Four national finalists will be decided via a public vote between Monday, May 12 and Sunday, May 18 at www.google.com/doodle4google.

Olene is invited, along with a parent or legal guardian, to attend a regional winner’s celebration at the Googleplex in Mountain View, Calif. on May 21, at which the four national finalists and the national winner, whose doodle will be displayed on the Google homepage, will be named.

The national winner will win a $10,000 college scholarship to be used at the school of their choice, a trip to the Googleplex, a laptop computer, and a T-shirt printed with their doodle.

Google will also award the winner’s school a $25,000 grant towards the establishment/improvement of a computer lab.

The culture of Ole & Lena

There’s Ole:

“Ole got a job in the fertilizer factory. The boss tried to determine the extent of Ole’s abilities. ‘Tell me, do you know anything about nitrates?’ Answered Ole… ‘All I know is dey are cheaper dan da day rates.”

And then there’s Lena:

Heron flies in

“The Heron” has arrived in Chaska. The sculpture, pictured Tuesday morning, is the fourth of the Chaska Arts in Public Places creations, and is located in Walden Park in Chaska’s Clover Ridge neighborhood.

It is a $21,000 metal sculpture created by artist Parker McDonald from Monticello. The funding for the new artwork comes from a Livable Communities grant from the Metropolitan Council.

McDonald is the same artist who painted the murals in the Chaska Community Center gym and pool. The Heron has been installed with the help of Public Works at Walden Park in Chaska. (Photo by Josh Hed)

Christmas in May

Bryce Koprucki, Jenny Doan, Kristina Doan, Alyssa Gammelgaard, and David Doan (pictured left to right) plant flowers at a Christmas in May home on Saturday afternoon. The annual event helps rehabilitate homes for Chaska resident. All those pictured are CHS students except for Jenny Doan, a Macalester College student, and sister of Kristina and David. The weather, sunny with temps in the 50s, lent itself to home repair.

Chaska Town Course reports first hole-in-one of 2008

This spring has not afforded Minnesota golfers much course time, but players have notched some successes so far.

Tom Peterson, assistant golf pro at the Chaska Town Course, reported the first hole-in-one at the course in 2008.

Adam Olson of Chanhassen hit a hole-in-one on the par-3, 171-yard 12th hole at the Town Course on May 1.

Olson used a 9-iron for the ace.

Sales boy

Justin Whitten, 11, directs traffic to his family’s garage sale on Arboretum Way on a blustery Saturday, during the annual Jonathan Festival of Garage Sales. Whitten had some motivation – he was trying to sell some of his toys, which included Mousetrap and Monopoly Jr. games and “Spiderman stuff.” What’s he into now? “Sports,” Whitten replied.

New year, new projects for Christmas in May

Despite being in their twelfth year of fixing up homes around town, Christmas in May organizers never face a shortage of applications. This year was no exception.

“We had 25 applications,” noted longtime organizer Mary Monteith.

What's all this about Syttende Mai?

By Carolyn Spargo

Norway has a long history beginning with the well-known Vikings.

Their first king was Harold I who introduced Christianity in Norway in the 900s. Around 1000, Leif Ericson sailed to North America. In 1380, Norway was united with Denmark. Norway, Sweden, and Denmark were united under Danish rule in 1397. Sweden revolted and broke away in 1523.

Canterbury Park's season begins May 3

The 2008 live racing season at Canterbury Park begins Saturday, May 3 with a 1:30 p.m. post time. The opening-day program will feature nine thoroughbred races, including the fourth running of the $50,000 Shot of Gold Stakes.

Full card simulcasting begins at 10 a.m., highlighted by the 134th Kentucky Derby from Churchill Downs. Post time for the Kentucky Derby is 5 p.m.

Prom no longer on march, but disparity is

Chaska High School prom will be a bit different this year – there is no grand march.

The senior class voted overwhelmingly to cancel the event, said Prom Committee Advisor Sara Gabrielson.

In the past, prom-goers would enter the CHS gymnasium, walking down a path and under arches, in front of popping camera flashes and adoring parents. Couples would have their portraits taken by a professional before heading off to the dance. This year, portraits will be taken at the site of the dance.
