Hiking is for the birdsMay 8, 2008 - 8:50am — Mark OlsonA bird-watching hike will be held at Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge this Saturday, May 10, from 8 to 10 a.m. The event will be held in conjunction with the North American Migration Count and Fort Snelling State Park, the hike will highlight the large diversity of birds to be found in the area during the spring migration period. 'Go big or go home': CHS grads begin canoe journeyApril 28, 2008 - 2:31pm — Mark OlsonBy Chuck Friedbauer “We’re ready to go,” said Colton Witte. “Absolutely ready to go,” agreed Sean Bloomfield, a few days before their journey. Matching years of adventurous dreams with recent diligent preparation, Bloomfield and Witte set off on a canoe trip, 2,200 miles from Chaska to Hudson Bay, at 7:30 a.m. Monday. The pair graduated early from Chaska High School this past month. “Go big or go home,” said Witte. “That’s our motto.” Sean Bloomfield and Colton Witte reach the Minnesota River railroad bridge in Carver on Monday morning, about an hour after leaving Chaska. The duo plans to canoe to the Hudson Bay, on a 70-day journey, via the Minnesota River, Red River, Lake Winnipeg, Nelson River and the Hayes River. A small group of friends, family and media saw them off at 7:30 a.m., Monday. Their canoe was emblazened with "Bloomitte Expeditions" and "Minneapolis to Hudson Bay."

In honor of the occasion, they’ve joined together to plan an Earth Day Wilderness Walk from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 19, at the Arboretum.Staff from the Arboretum and The Nature Conservancy will lead the hike, which will highlight Minnesota’s diverse native flora, according to an Arboretum press release. Minnesota hosts duck stamp contestMarch 28, 2008 - 9:54am — Mark OlsonFor the first time, Minnesota is hosting the Federal Duck Stamp Art Contest, sponsored by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The winning design chosen by a panel of five judges during the contest will be made into the 2009-2010 Federal Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamp, or “Duck Stamp.” |
