Let's Go!
Scoreboard
With just two weeks to go before Idol crowns this year's winner, the contestants tackled "Songs of the Cinema." Unfortunately the night played out more like a cheesy horror flick than an epic blockbuster. What else can explain why the final four would choose songs from such a-maz-ing movies like "Free Willy" and "Caddyshack"? Is anyone else in pure panic mode here? I just don't think this season can be saved.
The evening's sole highlight was Lee and Crystal joining forces on "Falling Slowly" - the standout number from the movie "Once." If not for that number, the whole night would have been a complete wash.
But hey, the good news is that if next week sticks to Idol formula, someone else will be picking the majority of the contestants' songs. Now that's something to look forward to - especially in a year where inspired song choice has been a rare, if not completely absent, commodity.
Lee Dewyze
Kiss From A Rose
Right idea, poor execution. Lee needed to take a sweet song and rough it up, but Seal's "Kiss From a Rose" gave him nothing but pitch and tempo problems. This performance was reminiscent of his Shania Twain number where he flailed and flopped on the stage with a song that he couldn't stay quite hold on to.
Michael Lynche
Will You Be There
"Free Willy"??? A song from "Free Willy," Mike? The shame. (I own the soundtrack so I can say that). Mike started off too low. Thankfully, he realized it and pulled out of that downward spiral quickly and bumped up the notes. It sounded ok as he went all gospel on it - but then there were times he seemed genuinely angry at that poor whale.
Lee Dewyze/Crystal Bowersox
Falling Slowly
Interesting having them finish each other's sentences on the first verse. Crystal sounded delicate and lovely and Lee came in on the chorus with some goosebump-inducing power notes. Kris Allen may own the Idol rights to this song, but it's always nice to hear it again and Lee and Crystal did it proud. If only Lee could have found a song like this for his solo number.
Casey James
Mrs. Robinson
Oh the irony of Casey, the original Season 9 piece of man meat, singing Simon & Garfunkel's "Mrs. Robinson" to one Kara Dioguardi. I can hardly stop laughing long enough to have a listen. Does he have a good sense of humor or did he not think through the ramifications of singing THAT song? I'd like to give him the benefit of the doubt, but I can't be sure. So Casey started singing and he's seated in the pit and it's all very casual - maybe too casual. The song lacked any energy at all. It might as well have been playing in the elevator.
Crystal Bowersox
I'm Alright
One huge groan escapted from my mouth when Ryan announced Crystal was doing a Kenny Loggins' "classic" from Caddyshack. What a doofy song. I guess these contestants were even more befuddled by the song list this week than usual. Crystal managed to bring "I'm Alright" into this decade. Less turned out to be more with the song sounding loads better when it was just Crystal and the percussionist. The best solo performance of the night, but that's not saying much.
Casey James/Michael Lynche
Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman
Casey James goes back to his Bryan Adams roots while Big Mike gets to sing ultimate schlock. It's the perfect comprimise! Too bad it wasn't nearly as good as Crystal and Lee. Casey on guitar was the best part.
Best solo performance of the night - Crystal
Most likely to go home: Casey

Three of last night's songs...
Back to page topThree of last night's songs make the iTunes Top Songs list today. No surprise that Crystal Bowersox and Lee Dewyze's duet pushed Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova's "Falling Slowly" from "Once" (SEE IT!) to #53 while Bryan Adams "Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman" (Casey James and Michael Lynche) went to #148 and Seal's "Kiss From a Rose" (Lee Dewyze) took the #170 spot.

More spoilers - Simon chose...
Back to page topMore spoilers - Simon chose "Hallelujah" for Lee (I'm sure Lee can erase the memories of Tim Urban's performance earlier this season, but Jason Castro's Season 7 stunner? - No way!) Kara/Randy chose John Mayer's "Daughters" for Casey James (proving they are no better at song selection than this year's contestants).
