Police: Chaska water is safe

» Read similar stories filed under:

According to the Chaska Police Department, a local resident received a call from someone claiming they were from Crystal Canyon Water and working with the city of Chaska to test water quality.

With a new infant in the home, “the people were receptive” to the call, said Chaska Police Chief Scott Knight. “Who’s not worried about water safety,” he said.

After arriving at the home yesterday, the representative tested the Chaska home’s water and said it was unsafe, then attempted to sell them a water filtration system, Knight said.

“It’s all bogus, and the facts are these: First of all, Chaska has some of the best and safest water in the state of Minnesota and we know this because the city tests the water daily. In addition to that, monthly, 25 separate samples are sent to the Minnesota Department of Health which does regular testing. Each and every tests passes without fail,” Knight said.

When the residents were told their water was bad, they became suspicious and called the city of Chaska, Knight said.

The case is under investigation. Calls to a Crystal Canyon Water business located in Red Wing were not immediately returned.

“If anybody is ever approached by anyone wanting to come to their home to sell them something the people should be very, very helpful and should not at all be hesitant to call us [at 9-1-1] and we will quickly determine whether or not they are on the up and up,” Knight said.

The police sent out an e-mail alert on the topic at 11:42 a.m., Dec. 30.

Tom Peterson, in marketing with Crystal Canyon, (located in West St. Paul, not Red Wing as previously reported) confirmed a Chaska resident was contacted by a Crystal Canyon representative.

“I do regret the homeowner felt that way,” Peterson said, when discussing the incident.

Regarding unsafe water claims, Peterson said it was “not a company policy. I mean it’s ridiculous to think that water would be unsafe to drink, of course. We specialize in treated water. You can take any water and make it better,” he said.

Regarding any connection to the city, he said “we don’t work for the city.”

Peterson said the company did talk with Chaska Police about the issue. Peterson said the company takes a look at any inquiry to “Make sure [it’s] up to company standards.”
