American Idol: 'Standard' Sinatra suggestions

» Read similar stories filed under:

So it's almost time for Sinatra week on Idol. Despite it being a minefield for criticism about being old-fashioned, the standards theme has also provided some really memorable performances in past seasons of Idol. These are the songs that form the backbone of American music today, so it's important to pay tribute to them. This is one Idol theme I have no desire to see retired.

Harry Connick, Jr. will not only guide the contestants this week, but word on the street is that he will also be arranging the songs and orchestrations for them. Can I get a Hallelujah??

The complete list of the 50 songs the Idols have to choose from is up on iTunes. Here's what I would pick for them:

Big Mike - "My Funny Valentine" Yes, this has been covered on Idol before, but I think he could do something akin to Elvis Costello's version and really wow us all.

Lee - There's a couple interesting covers he could look to if he wanted to maintain his rocker persona next week. He should check out "Strangers in the Night" by The Morning Benders or even Seether's version of "I've Got You Under My Skin" to see how to best use those gruff tones in his voice. I fear for Lee should he choose to go too straight on this challenge because most of these songs are slow, and slow songs tend to reveal a multitude of pitch problems for him.

Aaron - Little Aaron has one of the purest voices left in the competition so this week could be banner for him. I'd love for him to steer clear of the lovey-dovey songs and take on "They Can't Take That Away From Me."

Crystal - She could be brilliant on something like "Someone To Watch Over Me" (and yes, I remember Alison Iraheta's stellar version last season) or "In The Wee Small Hours of the Morning." After last week's instrument overload, she could benefit from doing something super stripped down that allowed her voice to shine.

Casey - I don't know many bluesy versions of Sinatra songs that could fit Casey (please send your suggestions) but maybe he could work out a sultry version of "I Only Have Eyes For You."

Word on the street is that guitars are a no-no for this week's Sinatra theme. Also, Siobhan was planning to sing "My Way" so don't expect to hear that from any of this week's hopefuls.

Some rumors of a "Movie Week" theme for the Top 4 are floating around. Apparently Bon Jovi has been tapped to perform "Blaze of Glory" which won a Golden Globe and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Song in 1991. It was featured in "Young Guns II."
