Have you tried Tommy's Old Fashioned Malt Shop?

» Read similar stories filed under:

Tommy's Old Fashioned Malt Shop in downtown Chaska had a soft opening on Wednesday.

I stopped by the restaurant for lunch today (in the Best Western River Inn & Suites building at southwest corner of Highway 41 and First Street). There were a number of full booths, so word must be spreading.

I had a mushroom Swiss burger ($6.55, which inlcuded fries); a large Coke ($1.75, with refills); and a half-malt ($3.35). The total with tax was $12.45 -- costs which should sooth those still shell-shocked by the former MIX's steep pricing.

The burger, with fried mushrooms, was great. The fries were particularly tastey (terrific batter). And the malt was a good chocolate topper to the meal.

Has anyone tried Chaska's newest eatery? What are your thoughts?

I also tried Tommy's Malt Shop on Friday, and was pleased to see a good-sized crowd eating there. I had the Old Fashioned Burger (with cheese) and a half-malt. The burger was very good, as were the fries (nice and crispy!). The banana malt was a sweet bit of dessert after the meal.

I was happy to note the reasonable prices - a person could eat a good meal there (a burger and fries, and a glass of water) for less than $5! I suspect that Tommy's may prove to be a popular stop with families out walking on the trail along the river next summer, as well as folks who are working or shopping in Chaska.

Tommy's was crazy busy on Saturday night from about 6 p.m. on. People waiting for tables and the whole shebang. The raspberry shakes were yummy, though, and definitely worth the wait.

We ordered a lot and were very excited. Although I was sad to see Spice Up go as the food was delicious and breakfast was amazing, my husband were excited to try Tommy's and did so on Sunday. We like to sample a lot so we ordered a bowl of Chili that was huge and deliciously hearty, the thickest tomato soup I had ever seen (cup size), a basket of Sweet Potato Fries that tasted like desert, I had an a la cart cheeseburger, my husband the Cowboy burger basket, and my son, a simple cheeseburger basket off the kids menu. The burgers and fries were great! We had to try desert and ordered a two scoop sundae with three toppings. The sundae was large and fed all three of us for under $4!

With everything we ordered, we were surprised to see the total was only $30!

We will go back again and hopefully in the future they will add breakfast as I think everyone likes a good diner breakfast!

I had a butterscotch sundae the other day. The ice cream is fabulous - a sweet creamy flavor and the frozen ice cream stays solid and doesn't go runny. Menu prices look reasonable, too. Looking forward to a burger basket next!

Went on Thursday night. Waiting line to get seated! Three of us couldn't finish probably because we filled up on malts! Wonderful. They could double their size. Should add bar stools to the counter for individual diners instead of taking a whole booth. Just what Chaska needed.

We stopped in to Tommy's for the first time a few weeks ago when we went down to see the river flooding. We have since been back once for takeout, and again for another family meal. Reasonably priced, delicious food. I raved about it on facebook, and several friends have now also tried it out and had similarly enjoyable experiences. Great burgers, to-die-for malts, and decent fries and onions. We will keep going back again and again. I agree with Kudos . . . just what Chaska needed.
