Country night came kind of late in this season which meant we missed out on that moment where a contestant realizes their true calling is not hip-hop, but good ol' country and western. That might have happened for Katie Stevens, were she still around, but alas, she's gone and so it was just another ho-hum night of blasé performances. Can we just crown Crystal already and call it a season???
The contestants tackled the not-so-vast songbook of Shania Twain and while nobody served themselves up for an easy elimination, no one knocked my socks off either. Instead, most of the night's entertainment came from an overly exuberant mentor who loved absolutely everything the kids did with her material (methinks someone hears the cha-ching of iTunes sales) and appeared only moments away from stealing Simon's soon-to-be-vacant judge's chair.
Here's how it all went down:
Lee Dewyze
You're Still the One
I liked the idea of Lee singing this song. He needed to slow things down for a week and show his softer side. Unfortunately, this performance wasn't as spot on as last week. It was pitchy at times and Lee never quite hit its stride.
Michael Lynche
It Only Hurts When I'm Breathing
Big Mike didn't nail this song as well as he has in past ballads. The same angst and vulnerability that Shania has when she sings it just wasn't there tonight. It was also missing any arc so I thought it came off boring.
Casey James
Don't
Much better than last week. When Casey lets go of the 80s, he shines. This felt like it could be his own song. It sounded contemporary and is right up there with "Jealous Guy" as one of his standout weeks.
Crystal Bowersox
No One Needs To Know
Hard to hate on Crystal for giving us a light and fun performance but this didn't really work for her. There were a lot of instruments on the stage that were competing for the same attention as her voice. Might have worked on a studio recording, but live, it was a bit of a mess. (And extra grrrs to those in the production booth who never flashed Crystal's boyfriend's t-shirt long enough for me to read the whole thing - Anyone catch what it said?)
Aaron Kelly
You've Got A Way
Good week for Aaron. And theoretically, it should have been. Aaron delivered a beautiful country ballad, topping what both Lee and Big Mike did. "You Got A Way" was a great fit for his voice and he found a way at last to really put some punch behind the lyrics. I could see him doing a whole album like this.
Siobhan Magnus
Any Man of Mine
Siobhan had some moments of greatness in this performance but it wasn't entirely cohesive. Like I noted last week, Siobhan has the raw talent but the polish and finesse is still missing. She can't deliver an entire song of greatness. She started off well - her lower register didn't fail her - then the middle got a little jumbled and Siobhan seemed out of breath and out of sync with the song. She hit one beautiful note as she growled her final "man" but there was that gratuitous glory note rearing its unnecessary head once again.
Cha-ching indeed. Five of the six Shania Twain songs the Idols performed last night hit the iTunes Top Songs list this morning:
#77 You're Still the One
#93 Don't
#105 It Only Hurts When I'm Breathing
#168 You've Got A Way
#196 Any Man Of Mine
No sign of Crystal's "No One Needs to Know." Hopefully that isn't an ominous sign but I couldn't get through to vote for her so I'm hoping that means she'll be safe.

The glassblower has shrieked for the last time in the Idol competition this year. Siobhan Magnus heads home after being joined in the bottom three by Big Mike and Casey.
