Highway 41 and Highway 101 river crossings close

» Read similar stories filed under:

Prepare to use the Bloomington Ferry Bridge.

The Highway 41 and Highway 101 Minnesota River crossings will close "at approximately 6 p.m." March 19, according to a MnDOT press release. "The roads will be kept open through rush hour if possible," stated the release.

"Things are changing by the minute," said Chaska Superintendent Tim Wiebe, who just estimated earlier this morning that 101 would close on Saturday, and Highway 41 would close on Sunday or Monday.

With the Jordan crossing closed, that leaves the Bloomington Ferry Bridge as the closest alternative.

Here's the detour details from MnDOT:

The suggested detour route for southbound motorists is eastbound Highway 212 to southbound I-494, to southbound Highway 169, to Highway 101. Northbound motorists can reverse the route.

After Highway 101 is closed, Highway 41 will be closed north of Highway 169 in Chaska between approximately Dem Com Road and Flying Cloud Drive. The suggested detour route is Highway 169, I-494 and Highway 212.

Motorists are encouraged to check www.511mn.org or dial 5-1-1 for updated road closure information.

I am sure I am in the Minority, I agree with Mn/DOT.

I agree from a Engineering and Safety perspective:

1) Engineering Point in that the soils/ground is already veru soft with the frost just going out and then with the road base being saturated, any amount of Traffic would do a large amount of damage to the roadways.

2) Safety in protecting the traveling public from the dangers of High/Swift moving Water. Your/our lives are worth much more than taking a chance if your car goes in along with those of rescue crews having to deal with a submerged vehicle. Your chance of survival is slim should your car go off the roadway.

Thanks Mn/DOT

Please explain that to me as "Flying Cloud Drive" is confusing me. Is that the same as Chaska Blvd? I'm kind of new to Chaska and with all the road name changes I get confused. Thanks :)

Yes, Flying Cloud Drive...

Yes, Flying Cloud Drive becomes Chaska Blvd. in Chaska,

All of this part of OLD 212 and now otherwise known from Eden Prairie through Chaska as County Road 61.

Ya know, Shame on anyone wanting another Cities Street name continuing through their City! (My personal sarcasim)

I would imagine that Highway 41 will be closed from the road where the Renaissance Festival empties out north to First Street. Flying Cloud Drive is the same as Chaska Boulevard and County Road 61 but it wouldn't make sense for the downtown streets to be closed.

When they shut down Hwy 41, they normally put the barricades up at the north end of the 41 bridge (by 1st Street in downtown Chaska) and just north of the back road into the Renaissance (just north of the railroad tracks). All other downtown streets in Chaska should still remain open.

You certainly will notice that downtown is much quieter (and more pedestrian friendly) over the next week or two! When I used to live downtown I could tell instantly when they closed and reopened 41 in the spring, even though I lived several blocks off of Hwy 41...entirely because of the noise (or lack thereof).

I'm kind of looking forward to being able to go to Dunn Bros next week without worry about the traffic. #sadbuttrue

Apparently the umpteen flashing signs drivers pass telling them Highway 41 is closed isn't enough to convince some commuters.

I saw two U-turns on the middle of Highway 41 on my way to work once drivers saw the 41 bridge barricade.

Back to page top

That's nothing compared to this weekend. There was a seemingly endless stream of traffic that didn't believe the barrage of "road closed" signs until they got to the foot of the bridge. They were met with equal frustration at the end of First Street when they found no access to Chaska Boulevard either.
