Top Midwest vacation spots

According to a recent survey of AAA travel agents, Chicago, Ill. is the No. 1 vacation spot in the Midwest.

The survey of 572 agents, conducted earlier this year, asked them to rate popular destinations based on their professional opinion. In order of preference:

1) Chicago, Ill.

2) Mackinac Island, Mich.

3) Branson, Mo.

4) Black Hills, S.D.

5) Wisconsin Dells, Wisc.

6) Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minn.

7) Traverse City, Mich.

8) St. Louis, Mo.

9) Kansas City, Mo.

10) Indianapolis, Ind.

AAA travel agents also selected their picks for “top family drive vacations.” In 2007, these destinations include, in rank order:

1) Florida

2) Grand Canyon

3) Washington, D.C. and Williamsburg

4) Black Hills

5) Carolinas

6) Southern California

7) The Great Southwest (Texas, Arizona, New Mexico)

8) New England

9) Northern California

AAA’s Annual Vacation Costs survey shows that a family of two adults and two children can expect to pay an average $269 per day for food and lodging. Lodging rates will average $152 a night, up nearly 7.9 percent from last year. Meals will cost $118, down 1.3 percent from 2006.

According to the AAA press release, travelers looking for bargains can head to North Dakota, with an average daily cost of $187; Nebraska, $199; Iowa, $201; Kansas, $201; and South Dakota, $204.

If you get on some mailing lists to receive deals on trips etc you can go to some cool places really cheap my wife and I while looking at Australia hotels ended up going for under 1000 and staying for a week in a nice hotel off season for such a great price.

I would agree with the Black Hills as a destination.
Chicago is also one of my favorite spots. In fact almost all of the destination spots are great.
