Predatory offender info meeting on April 26

The Chaska Police Department is holding an informational meeting on predatory offenders on Monday, April 26. Here’s the press release from the department:

This week we have been hearing about Ming Sen Shiue and his horrible crimes committed in 1980. After serving his 30-year sentence, Mr. Shiue is undergoing a Civil Commitment Trial, which would continue his confinement, as he is set for parole in July of this year.



Several thefts reported from vehicles, including two loaded handguns

The Chaska Police Department has announced that several thefts were reported overnight, all from vehicles.

Among the items were stolen from one unlocked car were two loaded handguns

All but one of the vehicles were unlocked, according to the police. “In at least one case, the thieves stole items from one unlocked car, and passed up a second car in the driveway that was locked.”



Chaska man charged with criminal vehicular operation

Jesus Julian Del Rio, 18, of Chaska, has been charged with two counts of criminal vehicular operation for an April 12 single-car crash, according to a press release from Carver County Attorney Jim Keeler.

Law enforcement officers determined that Del Rio appeared to be under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash, near the Hickory Street and Highway 61 intersection in Chaska, Keeler stated.

The victim was the passenger in the defendant’s car and is suffering life-threatening injuries.

Del Rio appeared in Carver County District Court on Friday, April 16.



Police hold safety camp for youth in July

Chaska Police Department will be holding a two-day Safety Camp on July 21 and 22 for youth entering third and fourth grades in fall 2010.

The camp, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., will be held at Firemen’s Park in downtown Chaska.

Youth will learn about fire safety, bike safety, first aid, water safety, personal safety and vehicle safety.

There will be an appearance by the Minnesota Department of Military Affairs helicopter. The pilots will talk about the dangers of drugs. There will also be a K-9 demonstration.



Man hurt after running into pickup

At about 4:30 p.m., Chaska Police officers responded to a pedestrian and vehicle accident on Fourth Street in downtown Chaska.

According to Chaska Police Chief Scott Knight, a 21-year-old man and an adult companion parked on the south side of the street.

The 21-year-old ran left the car and ran across the street toward the Chaska Library, Knight said. The man “didn’t look for traffic and ran into the side of a slow-moving pickup truck.” The collision knocked the man to the ground and he received lacerations from the fall, Knight said.

Thieves begin to bloom in spring

According to the recent Chaska Police Department newsletter, there have been a number of reports of thefts from garages and vehicles in the last few days.

Here's the notice: "The warm weather has resulted in an increased number of theft from garages and theft from vehicle complaints. Residents in the Independence Ave, Manuela Dr, Nightingale Dr, Crosstown Blvd, Van Sloun Rd, Ashley Dr, and Park Ridge Dr have already experienced this criminal activity.



Two survive plane crash along Minnesota River

The white tail of a Beech 95 Travel Air is sticking out of a weedy, swampy area along the edge of the Minnesota River in Eden Prairie. Two occupants survived the Thursday afternoon crash, helped out of the murky water by rescuers who ran down the long steep hill from Flying Cloud Drive.

The small plane crashed shortly after take-off from Eden Prairie's Flying Cloud Airport. It was headed to New Richmond, Wis. The emergency call came in at 2:41 p.m.

Cash lifted from a pair of pants lying on the bleachers. iPods snatched out of backpacks. Cell phones swiped from the tops of lockers.

Over the last month a dozen thefts at Chaska High School have been reported to police. The bump in thefts at the school was recently reported by the CHS newspaper, Hawk Herald, and is keeping school resource officer (SRO) Mike Kleber busier than usual.

“Theft is a problem up there,” said Chaska Police Detective Sgt. Jon Kehrberg. “Not just this year, but for whatever reason, our SROs have been making a lot of reports in the last 30 days.”
