Residents warned about suspicious solicitors

According to an alert from the Chaska Police Department, a west-metro police department north of Chaska advised of three suspicious solicitors, all white males from 18 to 33 years old, who were claiming to work for Xtreme Marketing. When questioned by a resident, they fled in a silver van and were later stopped by police. There were also residential burglaries in the area, but it is unknown if the solicitors were responsible.

The McLeod County Sheriff’s Emergency Response Unit and the Lester Prairie Police Department assisted Chaska police in a recent apartment raid and arrest.

According to a statement from Chaska Police Chief Scott Knight, his department’s detectives were investigating a reported burglary in which six handguns were stolen. They suspected 20-year-old Lester Prairie resident Matthew Garrett Shupe-Botner was involved and had the stolen handguns, and believed he was possibly armed.



Updated: Fight at high school sends one student to hospital

Police are investigating a fight at Chaska High School that sent one student to the hospital.

According to Chaska Police, school resource officers responded to a fight at the high school at about 8:05 this morning.

Three female students were allegedly involved. A 16- and 17-year-old student were subsequently arrested and taken to a juvenile detention center The victim (no age indicated) was sent to the hospital for injuries resulting from the fight that included a swollen nose, swollen lip and bruises.



District reduces resource officers

The District 112 school board, on May 13, approved a new school resource officer (SRO) agreement with the city of Chaska, reducing the number of officers in Chaska schools from three to two.

100 bikes registered

The Chaska Police Department’s May 18 bike registration at Tommy’s Old-Fashioned Malt Shop was a “huge success,” reports Community Partnership Specialist/Chaska Police Officer Julie Janke. The Police Department partnered with the malt shop, which provide a free malt to every child who registered their bike. One hundred bikes were registered, Janke said. Kids Dance provided music and entertainment, and the police department sold 15 bike helmets worth $22.95 for $10.

Capt. Kehrberg now second in command

On May 16, Chaska Police Chief Scott Knight promoted investigations commander Sgt. Jon Kehrberg to the rank of captain.

Kehrberg now holds the official designation of second-in-command of the Chaska Police Department, according to a press release from Knight.

Kehrberg began his career with the Chaska Police Department in 1988 as a Community Service Officer. During his tenure, Kehrberg has held the positions of patrol officer, patrol sergeant, field training officer (FTO), D.A.R.E officer, detective, and Investigations Commander.

According to a Chaska police alert issued Wednesday afternoon, an elderly Chaska woman received a call from someone identifying himself as “Brian Gates” from the Federal Trade Commission.

The man said that Random House said that she won $350,000 if she agreed to pay a 1 percent tax. The telephone numbers given to verify the information were linked to the scam, according to the police report.



Register a bike, receive a malt

The Chaska Police Department, with Tommy’s Old Fashioned Malt Shop, is hosting a bike registration from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday, May 18.

At the event, children 12 and under can register their bicycle and receive a coupon for a free kid’s malt. There will also be helmets on sale for $10 that are normally $22.95, according to a police department press release.

Kidsdance will provide live music for the event, which is at the malt shop, 2 River Bend Place (in front of the Best Western River Inn & Suites building).



Remembering 'Uncle Joe': Slain officer had big influence on Chaska sergeant

As a young boy growing up in Maplewood, the sight of a police car excited Mike Duzan like nothing else could. At a time when most kids would be wary of an approaching officer, Duzan couldn’t wait to see who was wearing the badge inside.

“I’d see the squad car pull up and I’d look to see if it was Uncle Joe,” he said.
