The jury has been chosen and opening statements are scheduled to begin Monday as the first week in the Everson murder trial concluded late Friday afternoon.
Out of a total of 99 jurors, 15 were selected Friday to hear the state's case against Grant Everson. Everson is charged with first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of his mother Nancy Everson and second-degree murder in the attempted killing of his father Tom Everson.
Day three in the Everson murder trial continued with jury selection Thursday. Slowly but surely, prosecution and defense attorneys are whittling down the original pool of 99 jurors to a slim 15.
Attorneys individually questioned 15 jurors during the morning and early afternoon, ultimately dismissing eight.
Jury selection in the murder trial of the State vs. Grant Everson began Wednesday as attorneys for the prosecution and defense started weeding through a long list of potential jurors.
Everson, 21, is facing charges of first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of his mother Nancy Everson and second-degree murder in the attempted killing of his father Tom Everson.
Potential jurors for the State vs. Grant Everson murder trial filled the first-floor hall of the Carver County Justice Center Tuesday morning. In all, 99 people were called for jury duty via letter. Ninety-seven of those letter recipients showed up.
The date of the trial of the State vs. Grant Everson in the murder of Nancy Everson was listed incorrectly as Monday, Nov. 13 in the print edition of this week's Herald. The trial will begin on Tuesday, Nov. 14 at the Carver County Courthouse.
Joel Beckrich has pleaded guilty for his part in the fatal shooting of Nancy Everson.
According to a press release issued Wednesday by Carver County Attorney Mike Fahey, Beckrich pleaded guilty to charges of intentional murder in the second degree and attempted murder in the first degree for the death of Nancy Everson and the attempted shooting of her husband Tom at their Chaska home on Jan. 15.
