The Chaska City Council voted unanimously to order the North Meadows street reconstruction project scheduled for to begin this summer.

The $1.5 million project will include the reconstruction of several streets in the North Meadows neighborhood as well as upgrades to the sanitary sewer and water systems.

City Engineer Bill Monk told the council that the street work should last “a good 50-60 years.”

Monk noted that as part of the project up to six trees may have to be removed and the road may be slightly narrowed.

Heeding the parting words of former Mayor Gary Van Eyll, the Chaska City Council continues to consider lengthening the term of the mayor from two to four years.

In a work session Monday night, the council opted to seek out public opinion on the idea before proceeding in a more formal manner.

“I don’t see why we can’t at least explore it,” said Councilor Chris Schulz. “It’s just a discussion and we’d like some input.”

A signal at Engler Boulevard and Clover Ridge Drive could become a reality this summer. The intersection has experienced significant traffic since the opening of new Highway 212.

City Engineer Bill Monk said city staff is working with the county on planned upgrades to Engler Boulevard west of Highway 212 for 2011, with a traffic signal to be installed at Clover Ridge Drive this summer.

Approvals have been made at both the federal and state level for improvements to Highway 41, leaving the Chaska City Council to award the construction bid Monday night. Northwest Asphalt, Inc. will likely begin work downtown in April, City Engineer Bill Monk said.

As part of the $453,000 project, crews will install a signal at Second Street, bollards, planters, banner poles and medians at First, Third and Fifth streets.

The bill for last month's special election for mayor is in and penny pinchers should be pleased. After estimating the election would cost upwards of $25,000, the final totals came in just over $15,000.

According to City Administrator Matt Podhradsky, the election cost the city $15,830. Money was spent on election judge payroll, ballot printing, county services, machine maintenance, suppies and overtime for two city employees.

With more money in the coffers, due to a special tax levy, the city is finally ready to resume its street reconstruction program this year. Though the work is overdue, affected homeowners and business owners may not like price tag that comes with it.

“Now the fun really begins,” said City Administrator Matt Podhradsky, tongue-in-cheek.

After two weeks of interviews, Monday night the Chaska City Council has selected members for the city’s various commissions. Twenty residents applied for the 13 open slots.

Returning to the Planning Commission are Alex Young, Leanne Ashley and Dan Keyport.

Nate Bostrom will resume his place on the Park and Recreation Board. He will be joined by newcomers Jonathan Grau and Nicholas Mason.

Molly Koivumaki will return to the Human Rights Commission along with Barb Colhapp and Tracy Pass.
