With large white tents beginning to dot the horizon line just north of Pioneer Trail and west of Highway 41, the countdown to the 2009 PGA Championship is well underway. In less than a month, the tournament at Hazeltine National Golf Club will be in full swing, but before then, there is still much work to be done.

Michael Belot moved to Chaska in fall 2006 to begin preparations for this year’s PGA championship. The 2009 PGA tournament director had barely wrapped up the 2006 championship in Medinah, Ill. before packing his bags for Minnesota.

This holiday weekend will be full of patriotic fun and events on Saturday.

The Jonathan Association homeowners group will kick off its Fourth of July Saturday morning with a 5K fun run/walk on Jonathan trails, with registration at 8 a.m. and the run kicking off at 8:30 a.m.

Memorial Day events this year include a series of cemetery visits followed by a parade and ceremony in downtown Chaska:

* Cemetery visits begin May 25 at East Union at 7:30 a.m., and end at St. John’s at 9:30 a.m.

The 24th annual Chaska Area Taste will take place Wednesday night at City Square Park.

It is the first year the event will be run by the Southwest Metro Chamber of Commerce following the merger of the Chaska, Chanhassen and Victoria chambers. The event will cover the four member communities of the new chamber, including Carver.

Christmas in May will take place on Saturday, May 9.

Each year, community volunteers take one day to rehabilitate a number of homes around the city for residents who are unable to do it themselves, either financially or physically. This year will mark the program's 13th year in action.

A light breakfast and presentation will take place at 7 a.m. at Guardian Angels Catholic Church, 218 Second Street West. Lunch is provided for volunteers on site.

The annual Jonathan Festival of Garage Sales will take place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday April 25. The event will be hosted by St. Andrew West Church.

Maps of sale locations will be available at the church, 112090 Hundertmark Road. St. Andrew West will also host concessions available for a free-will donation.

Proceeds from the event will go to the CAP Agency Food Shelf in Chaska. Thrivent Financial for Lutherans will be supplementing the donations with a matching grant.
