Drayzen, you read my mind ... I agree (also with respect to our Spanish-speaking friends). I always "button push" to another station when I hear Jose' Feliciano sing Feliz Navidad. I'm not sure if it's his pitch or that the song is seriously overplayed each holiday season or what ... but it grates on me. Big time.
OK, I have to vote for a second "most annoying" song. The Chipmunks' song just played on the radio station ... a few inches from my computer. ARGHGHG. Fully annoying. I'm turning Alvin off so I can get some work done.
We must have been listening to the same radio station because on my short drive to work I heard three of the candidates for most annoying holiday song, "The Chipmunks Song," "The 12 Days of Christmas" (John Denver and the Muppets no less) and "This Christmas." Yikes.
(Mollee Francisco is a staff writer for the Chaska Herald. She can be reached at [email protected].)
This list is missing "Happy Christmas (War is Over)" by John Lennon and Yoko Ono. That song is does not put me in the mood for the holidays whatsoever. Yuck.
(Mollee Francisco is a staff writer for the Chaska Herald. She can be reached at [email protected].)
I can't believe you don't like "Happy Christmas (War is Over)," Mollee! I love that song. Though, truth be told, the screechy Yoko-and-the-kids stuff at the end does get a little old after awhile.
I think the most annoying song for me is "Let it Snow," because I hate snow and all I can think of is, "No, do NOT let it snow. Let it be 79 degrees and sunny."
Christmas Shoes is horribly annoying. Its overly earnest singer goes on way too long and trys way too hard to tug at the heart strings. I guess I'm just cold hearted, but I find the whole song so obviously schmultzy it's annoying.
I didn't vote it as the worst, but I know what steinie and Drayzen mean about Feliz Navidad. Especially with that song becoming the new jingle for the Taco Bell commercials. Maybe Jose Feliciano needs the money, but I'm gonna get real sick of that song real soon.
Even the best Christmas songs get tiring by Christmas Day.
We start playing Christmas music around the house around Decemeber 1st, and by the 20th I've had enough already!
I like to think about KOOL 108 and 102.9 LITE FM staff sitting around debating what song they should play when the Christmas music ends. After a month-plus of holiday tunes, what song do you jolt everyone back to reality with?
(Mollee Francisco is a staff writer for the Chaska Herald. She can be reached at [email protected].)
My pick would be "A Day in the Life" by the Beatles. I think that crazy middle section is both intense and brilliant and could snap us all back into the daily grind.
I actually own the Elmo & Patsy ALBUM with "Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer" on it. But, since I don't own a turntable, I can't listen to it over and over like I used to -- but I still know almost all the words and can sing it if someone asks nicely.
That same circle of vinyl also has another of my favorite worst songs: "Percy the Puny Poinsettia," which tells listeners that "If he had just been kept wetta, he'd be a house plant today."
It's actually very annoying, but I find myself singing it -- even now -- because it's very catchy!
Sadly, Alvin and the Chipmunks could soon be on the "worst holiday movie" list as well as the "most annoying holiday song" list -- if the trailer is any indication.
And how does Jason Lee go from an enjoyable comedy series like "My Name is Earl," to movies like "Underdog" and "Alvin and the Chipmunks"?
Oh, and for the record, I like "The Chipmunks Song" (in moderation).
"Alvin and the Chipmunks" is actually a very tolerable movie. Totally formulaic and predictable, but those dang CGI chipmunks are adorable. I wanted to take that pudgy little Theodore home with me.
(Mollee Francisco is a staff writer for the Chaska Herald. She can be reached at [email protected].)
My radio station of choice, through out the year, but especially at Christmas, is 98.5 KTIS. Trust me, the best place to hear Christmas music that doesn't get annoying, is where they play music about the true meaning of Christmas. It frustrates me that my 3 year old niece doesn't have a clue to the real meaning of Christmas, and too many of these songs don't help much. Don't get me wrong, I heard the Chipmunk song on there the other day, but rather then being annoyed I had to laugh. I don't think I had heard it since I was a kid.
From Entertainment Weekly's list of "Christmas bummers:"
"Prince, ''Another Lonely Christmas'' Not only is his girlfriend gone, not only is she dead, but she died...on December 25! (Of pneumonia, or strep — he's not sure.) Of course, this being a Prince song, there's a verse devoted to fondly remembering her naked. "
Most annoying on your list? "Last Christmas" by Wham, by far.
(Karla Wennerstrom is the editor of the Eden Prairie News. She can be reached at [email protected].)
"New Shoes" is still the only Christmas song (that is played regularly enough) that will force me to get up walk over to the radio and change the channel. Other non-seasonal songs that make me do this are: "I Touch Myself" and "Greensleeves."
(Mollee Francisco is a staff writer for the Chaska Herald. She can be reached at [email protected].)
I couldn't pick just one and a couple of them weren't even on the list! The Christmas Shoes is just depressing; Do They Know it's Christmas is up there too. But the ones that just make me mad are Auld Lang Syne by Dan Fogelberg and My Favorite Things(there are several versions and none of them should be played)! Neither one is even a Christmas song! Who decided they were? Auld Lang Syne is probably played because of the name and because the event happens to take place on Christmas Eve, but that doesn't make it a Christmas song. And My Favorite Things is from Sound of Music, which, if I remember correctly, didn't even have a Christmas scene in it.
Good points. I don't know what the criteria are for Christmas songs, but that Dan Fogelberg song is an unfortunate addition. And I have no idea how "Favorite Things" got on the list. (Why not "The Lonely Goatherd"?)
There has been at least one good song added to the "Christmas" song list in the last few years -- "Baby it's cold outside," by Dean Martin.
I think it's inclusion is due to the movie "Elf." I don't know how a song featuring a guy conspiring to spend the evening with a date falls on a Christmas song list.
We don't have alot of choices for radio stations here in Rochester compared to the Twin Cities, and the one that plays Christmas music here literally must have a selection of only 50 songs. Since Thanksgiving day I swear I have heard all 50 of them at least 50 times. And I am getting tired of them all!
