Wright County Sheriff Gary Miller understands the pressures that a career in law enforcement entails. As a 30-plus-year veteran of the department, he is all too familiar with the stresses his employees face and how it can change them over time.
“Law enforcement jobs damage people,” he said, pointing to higher-than-average divorce, suicide and chemical abuse rates.

This was no practice for next weekend's River City Days water fights. Members of the Chaska Fire Department were on hand Friday night to help wash away potato sludge after a truck spilled its contents on Highway 41. One member of the fire department reported that the truck driver was cut off forcing him to slam on his brakes and lose his load. Highway 41 was closed between Third and Fourth streets for over an hour as crews cleaned up the mess. (Photo by Mollee Francisco)

It was supposed to be a simple evening walk to check on her garden plot near Winkel Park. But before Mary Javurek could get more than a glimpse of her green beans, she found her socks soaked in blood and a stinging pain radiating from her calves. In the blink of an eye, Javurek had been bit by a dog.
“It bit me before I had any chance,” she recalled. “All I could hear was a horrible growl.”
