Chaska Obscura: Hip to be in the square

Cars line up around City Square Park in Chaska for a celebration in the 1920s. Also in the photograph is what appears to be a horse-drawn popcorn wagon. All the light poles have been wrapped with garland for the event.

Chaska Obscura: 2nd Street in stereo

Pictured is a stereoscope of Second Street West in 1885. The photo was possibly taken from the top of the current-day Dunn Bros Coffee building at the southeast corner of Highway 41 and Second Street. The temporary archway at the far left possibly indicates the 1885 dedication of Guardian Angels Guardian Angels Catholic Church.

What: A vivid description of a German wedding in Chanhassen.

Published: Originally published in the Minneapolis Tribune, then reprinted in the book “Visitin’ ‘round in Minnesota.” The book includes short stories on several towns throughout the state. Storrs gives this description: “The inconsequent sketches included in this book represent a portion of a most interesting summer spent in rambling over this wonderful State of Minnesota.” A portion of this story was reprinted in “Chanhassen: A Centennial History.”

Chaska Obscura: Ist das nicht eine Schnitzelbank Club?

This photo, taken by Chaska’s Werner Studio, is the Schnitzelbank Club’s “Goodbye Feed.” Pictured left to right (front row): Paul Tietz, Peter Kartes, Oscar Lundstrom, Art Lahl, Paul Kayeska, Paul Gastler and Bill Burkhart; (back row) Frank Geisler, Oswald Muyres, Bill Holtz, Bill Baer, Frank Gastler, Conrad Happ, Francis Meukel, Herman “Spitz” Darsow, Irwin Schmidt, “Hook” Meyer, Otto Gastler, Elmer Young and Butch Gehl. The civic organization ran from about 1912 to 1923, and sponsored a number of dinners and dances.
