Downtown Chaska's albino squirrelDowntown Chaska may have a new mascot – “Whitey,” the albino squirrel.
The animal has already become a favorite among workers in downtown Chaska, which the squirrel calls home.
“He’s really brave,” noted Janet Pexa, an employee with Zyrel, located in the Coldwell Banker Burnet building just south of the railroad tracks along Highway 41. She first spotted the squirrel a month ago, and gave it the moniker “Whitey.”
Many of her coworkers didn’t believe Pexa had spotted an albino squirrel until she captured the animal with her camera.
Whitey is well known around the Chaska Bakery. Its domain appears to be the Chaska Rex, Chaska Bakery, bus stop, Dolce Vita Wine Shop-area of downtown, at the southeast corner of the highways 212 and 41 intersection. However, the animal has also been spotted as far as City Square Park.
“He struts his stuff like he’s a big shot. I guess he is,” Pexa said.
He’s also apparently a risk-taker, crossing a busy Walnut Street to hang out at the bus stop. “He is a pretty confident little guy. I hope he’s not too confident, especially the streets he crosses,” Pexa said.“I think he does whatever he wants,” Pexa noted, adding, “He has a wine shop and a bakery. He’s got a good life.”

Doesn't the presence of albinism (is that a word?) also cause health defects and problems? They're interesting to look at, but do albino squirrels need a human-led charge to preserve their poor health issues?

Janet Pexa gives us this Oct. 4 update on “Whitey”:
Yesterday morning he was in front of my car at my 10:15 break. Then I watched him go into a dark maple tree and sit there. Then later when I came out for lunch he was gone.
This morning, though, coming into work he was sitting in the tree again. We all thought it was pretty funny because we understand that he’s a squirrel but we never saw him in a tree before. My boss, Alexandra, thinks that he is possibly going to make the tree his home for the upcoming winter. Only the best for “Whitey.”
He still doesn’t act like a squirrel because he just doesn’t tear off when you get close to him he just trots away.
Alexandra did see him with a gray squirrel, so we we’ll see if maybe in the future we see white/gray squirrels strutting around.
That’s our latest update for now. Thanks for checking to see how he is.

Back to page topIs Whitey AWOL?
The Herald's albino squirrel correspondent Janet Pexa gives us this update:
I haven’t seen him for a few days. Alexandra also stated that she has been looking around for him too and no sightings.
There was a wine tasting the other day so maybe the commotion or the wine has him held up somewhere.
Last week he was sitting in the dark maple tree and cruising around a little bit, but we are anxious to see him. I will let you know if we spot him.
I hope he isn’t over someone’s fireplace.

Funny story about Whitey......
Back to page topFunny story about Whitey... Either he gets around or there is more than one albino in the area! He spends significant time in my parents yard (corner of East 2nd Street and North Ash Street). Incidentally, parents raised a squirrel that fell out of it's nest as a newborn. His name is Lucky and now lives outdoors, but ever since he made the transition, Lucky has never been 'accepted' by the other squirrels. Not really sure why, but it's obvious that he travels solo while the other squirrels seem to congregate. It's been documented that albino animals are often shunned as well. So naturally, Lucky and Whitey (or another albino) became friends and can be seen together regularly in my parents trees.
Here is my Youtube video of Lucky and my Dad after he was set free. The video is a little 'grainy' as it was taken with my cell phone.

Back to page topI finally saw Whitey the albino squirrel in person on Saturday afternoon -- hanging out by the railroad tracks in front of the Rex.
Being the closest thing Chaska has to a local movie star, I decided to give him the paparazzi treatment. The photos have been added to the original posting.
Special thanks to my father (whose nickname, coincidently, is "Whitey") for spotting the squirrel.
Whitey or Whitina? It's...
Back to page topWhitey or Whitina? It's been a while since a Whitey update, so we contacted albino squirrel correspondent Janet Pexa for any recent sightings.
Here's the latest: "As a matter of fact last week Alexandra saw him and asked me to come outside to see him. Well there he was under a green truck (I believe there’s a picture of Whitey on the tire of this green truck) eating a pile of sunflower seeds.
"Then he jumped on the tire just like the previous picture. Maybe he was posing for us?
"He has definitely got a bigger tummy now. Alexandra posed the question is Whitey possibly a Whitina? We aren’t sure when squirrels have babies, but he or she is a bigger Whitey than before. Of course now it’s going to be harder to spot him with all the snow, but we always look."
Janet -- Thanks for the update!
The Herald’s albino...
Back to page topThe Herald’s albino squirrel correspondent, Janet Pexa, sent in an update of Whitey the squirrel, who resides and frolics outside of her downtown office:
“Alexandra called me to the window, and there was Whitey eating the bird seed and corn we brought. This is the first time I have seen him in a long time. Alexandra saw him the last week in January. He looks like he needs a bath. That is probably because the snow is so white that he looks a little yellow. He looks thin too.”
That same week, Pexa reports, her co-worker saw Whitey scope out a nearby hawk, sitting in the tree by the bird seed. “She was quite nervous because the Hawk went into the bushes in front of the wine store, thinking maybe the Hawk got our little buddy. All is well though, as he is munching on bird seed.
“Like everyone I’m sure he can’t wait for the season to change."
Pexa promises an update the next time she spots the squirrel.
Whitey update: Hanging out...
Back to page topWhitey update: Hanging out at the wine shop, eating well, possibly watching big-screen TV.
Here's Janet Pexa's latest on downtown's albino squirrel:
We have seen Whitey. He was sitting on the picnic table the other day and then Alexandra saw him in front of the wine shop by Hwy. 41 too close for comfort.
He has been eating well and running around. He shares his tree with the robins. We have seen a gray squirrel by his tree too, but Whitey is always by himself.
His tree is huge so we think he has all the comforts of home in there. Probably a fridge, stereo system, spa, and a large screen television – at least we hope he does.

Back to page topI saw Whitey cross a busy Highway 41 the other day, running from near Kelly's and heading toward the wine shop. That was my first Whitey sighting - although I have seen his twin in Shakopee a time or two.

Back to page topWhitey the albino squirrel made it through the winter.
This photo is courtesy of Ashley Wickenhauser, with the Chaska Area Chamber of Commerce. Wickenhauser recently took the photo of the squirrel outside of her office, next to city hall (the white speck in the bottom left corner of the photo), apparently picking up tax forms or paying a utility bill.
There's no telling if the squirrel survived the trip to his home on the other side of Highway 41.

Whitey MIA? Squirrel-spotter...
Back to page topWhitey MIA?
Squirrel-spotter Janet Pexa hasn't spotted Whitey the albino squirrel in the last few months:
"We are worried about our friend. We keep looking at haven’t seen a trace of him. Of course were hoping for the best. Maybe he has a friend that is keeping him busy. We look at his tree that is up against our bldg and we haven’t seen him. Alexandra thinks that he has moved on the other side of 41 since that seems to be the last place he’s been spotted."
So, has anyone spotted the critter lately?

Whitey, downtown’s albino...
Back to page topWhitey, downtown’s albino squirrel mysteriously disappeared late last year. However, it appears there may be a Whitey redux in residential Chaska.
Jean Weber sent in this shot of an albino squirrel in her backyard. This photo was taken last Friday while the squirrel fed on bird seed.
The other squirrels seem to chase the albino, Jean reports. “It appeared as if at least one of them nipped the albino, and today we have not seen it, although we have seen the other squirrels all day.”
