Scoreboard

The reunited Gear Daddies are scheduled for the 25th annual Taste of Minnesota on July 1, according to a press release.
They join the Charlie Daniels Band and Village People on the lineup, which begs the question: Is the beloved Minnesota band now considered an oldies band?
How many years does it take to be an oldies band? I would guess about 20.
Along with many other Minnesotans my age, I remember the band raucously rocking it out in local college venues.
Would other Minnesota bands, like the Replacements and Husker Du/Gear Daddies also be considered oldies bands? It's just a matter of time before their songs are playing on classic rock stations or car commercials.
I almost expect to see the bands playing state fair line-ups, missing a few musicians, ala Mike Nesmith during the Monkees reunion tour.
Perhaps they could group all of Minnesota’s just-missed-out-on-the-grunge-scene bands together for some sort of retrospective outdoor concert.
They would just need to make sure the show is over before the 10 o’clock news.

For us Minnesotans --...
Back to page topFor us Minnesotans -- especially being specifically from Gear Daddies country -- they are excluded from ever becoming an "oldies" band. To be in that category, the lyrics would have to mention something timely such as tail fins, a disco ball or Nixon.
I do admit, it's tough to...
Back to page topI do admit, it's tough to put a band from my college years into the oldies category.
However, I'm hearing a lot of 1980s songs on the oldies radio stations.
And while I have to give the Gear Daddies credit for turning a song about a Zamboni into a hit, they do fit the oldies criteria:
* No albums (as a group) for years.
* Almost one generation between their peak and now.
* Performing together only as a "reunion" band.
For example:
If Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr got together for a concert, it would be an oldies band.
If the Rolling Stones got together for a concert, it wouldn't necessarily be an oldies band, because they've continued to perform and create a body of music - even though they do perform their classics.
Does anyone else have any "oldies" criteria to add to the list?
Can we label them as...
Back to page topCan we label them as "classic"? "Oldies" has such a moldy and worn out sound to it! i do think the Gear Daddies and their MN counterparts are much more classic than old. Their sound never goes out of style and has influenced current musicians.
Doesn't it bring a smile to your face when you hear Martin Zellar croon, "R-r-r-r-andeee"? Doesn't all just feel right with the world when you're "rollin' down interstate 90 for a dream vacation in the dells"? (and, no, i don't still have my high school/college hair-do - my bangs are much flatter now!)
Gear is still good!
ReneeF makes a good point. I...
Back to page topReneeF makes a good point. I think "Oldies" should be reserved for music that was made before 1970 (most of the 70's music should not be played at all). "Classic" is a better word for the Gear Daddies. I just heard "Stupid Boy" on Drive105 - I doubt I'd hear that song on Kool108. "Oldies" brings to mind Buddy Hollie, the Kingston Trio, the Beach Boys, Billie Holiday, Elvis, etc. All great musicians that should be played on an oldies radio station. I can't imagine a Gear Daddies song stuck in the middle of these artists. It just wouldn't sound right.
"Classic" would work....
Back to page top"Classic" would work.
Classic would now be 1980s or younger.
I used to think of the 1970s as the "Classic Rock" era, so I guess that should now be bumped into the "Oldies" category.
So maybe music older than 30 years should be considered "Golden Oldies."
Earlier this year, Cool 108, which I always considered an Oldies station, appeared to drop much of its 1960s playlist, instead concentrating on the 1970s. So 108 would still be considered an Oldies station.
In the 1980s, Oldies stations still played lots of 1950s music (Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, etc.). So Oldies radio stations apparently consider anyone who listens to music recorded more than 30 years ago as outside their demographic.
By the way, the radio station 95.5, which I think is out of New Prague, is a great "Golden Oldies" station, and is one of the few places on the dial to still find lots of good 1960s music.
Calling old rock music...
Back to page topCalling old rock music "Classic" instead of "Oldies" is just a way to soften the realization that the music of your youth is now dated and old. It is also a reflection of one's own taste, with "classic" being songs you appreciated , and "Oldies" being songs you didn't care for (but someone else did like), or songs that were hits before your time.
Chuck Berry, the Beatles, and ABBA are all oldies to some people and classic to others.
Music has the power to remind you of a specific place and time in your life, evoking powerful memories of good times and bad.
And, jennyjean4, I could put together a catalog of 70's music together that you couldn't touch with the 80's and 90's combined. Of course that's just the opinion of someone who had the music of the 70's as the soundtrack of my youth.
Categorizing music just...
Back to page topCategorizing music just isn't a good idea. There are only 2 catogories for me - music I like and music I don't like. I like all genres from all eras - it's the songs that either stand up to the test of time or not. Classic/Oldie - I guess it doesn't really matter what a song is labeled - it only matters whether or not it was good to begin with. The labeling of music should really only matter to radio stations who are trying to target a certain audience.
I think that "Classic" rock...
Back to page topI think that "Classic" rock is just a name that some baby boomer marketing/ad person came up with to make "oldies" easier to sell as a radio format. I agree with jennyjean4, categorizing music should be as simple as "music I like and music I don't."

Just wondering. ;)

The Gear Daddies were a band...
Back to page topThe Gear Daddies were a band out of Austin, Minn. that were big on the college bar circuit in the 1980s and 1990s.
They had a number of great songs -- "Color of her Eyes" and "Stupid Boy" were a couple of classics. They sang about Highway 218, the Wisconsin Dells and other Midwest instutitions.

Back to page topGear is Still Good! Although i am now living 260 miles away, when i can make it to a Gear Daddies reunion show, or a Martin Zellar show, i come down.
The atmosphere at the shows is so upbeat. Positive. It is always a happy place. The lyrics still speak to me; back when i was Bored and 18 through today, busy and 39.
I have made probably 20 shows in the last 6 years, whether it has been O'Garas, Fineline, Majors, or a street dance in Rochester, or Fargo, and yes, Red Carpet in St.Cloud.
They are a great reason for me to visit the cities. I have turned many people on to them, and continue to do so. Many cd's i have not had returned. That is o.k. I know they are being listened to. I will buy more.
And yes, at every show, they KNOW you want to hear "ZAMBONI".

Back to page topFor all of us who like to rock out to the oldies: The Gear Daddies have sold out their Dec. 28 and 29 show at the Fine Line, but a Dec. 26 show apparently still has tickets available.

Back to page topThe Gear Daddies are playing another rare set of shows Dec. 26 and Dec. 27 at the Fine Line Music Cafe, whose Web site (www.finelinemusic.com) describes them as "legendary country rockers" (but not "classic" or "oldies" rockers).
