The Miracle of Pizza

In 1960, Robert “Rup” and Mary “Mert” Burkhart were apparently the first to serve pizza in Chaska at their 3.2 tavern “Rup’s Bar.”

At the time, the Herald announced that “Pizza – an Italian dish that is fast rating with the hot dog and hamburger as an American ‘snack’ is now being offered locally.”

Later, J’s Restaurant (now Bobby K’s Embers America) was renowned for its pizza. Now pizza is offered in several locals in Chaska. (Papa Murphy’s is the latest to open.)

Most of us have memories pertaining to pizza. Parents use it to feed masses of youth congregating at their house. College students use it to survive. Offices order it for lunch.

Do you have a fond memory of eating at, or working for, a hometown pizza parlor? Does anyone remember Chaska’s “first” pizza at Rup’s or J’s?

Share your pizza memories.
