The jury has been chosen and opening statements are scheduled to begin Monday as the first week in the Everson murder trial concluded late Friday afternoon.
Out of a total of 99 jurors, 15 were selected Friday to hear the state's case against Grant Everson. Everson is charged with first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of his mother Nancy Everson and second-degree murder in the attempted killing of his father Tom Everson.
Jurors were apprised Friday that the prosecution would be levying two additional charges against Everson. Those charges are aiding and abetting murder in the second degree and aiding an attempted premeditated murder in the first degree. Both charges are related to the murder of Nancy Everson.
"These new charges are not a surprise," defense attorney Christine Funk told the jury pool. "They do not change the facts of the case."
As Everson glanced straight ahead, his fingers interlaced on the table in front of him, Funk also told the jury pool that the defense would not be disputing the two charges of attempted murder.
"We do that after great deliberation," Funk said.
She then took the opportunity to ask the jury pool how that would affect their view of the case.
"If I tell you Grant Everson is guilty of attempted murder, do you stop listening? That's my question," she said. "Can you put your emotions aside knowing he was there?"
Prospective jurors indicated unanimously that the new information did not change their pledge to be fair and impartial and to assume that Everson was innocent of the remaining charges.
Everson's trial continues Monday with opening statements. Assistant County Attorney Peter Ivy indicated that the prosecution may also begin calling witnesses Monday.
