I recently called Waste Management to cancel my service and go to a competitor who would save me about 50%, or $160 a year. I have watched my bill increase $5 or more dollars each billing cycle and finally had enough. When I called to cancel, after trying to lure me back with the promise of matching Evergreen’s rates, I was informed that I would be charged a $25 container retrieval/pick up fee. This fee was just implemented as of December 2007. I was flabbergasted that I would be charged for them to pick up their own containers! I was given the option of loading the cans into my car and driving them to their Burnsville facility myself, but who wants smelly cans in their car? This basically amounts to a cancellation penalty in disguise. Waste Management customers be warned! I wonder if I was moving out of their service area, if I would still be charged this penalty???
