Some stories dominated headlines and airwaves for a time, but did not make the list after experiencing a backlash.

As AP writer David McCrary quotes Mike Bailey, managing editor of The Courier News in Elgin, Ill.: "Anyone who picks the Anna Nicole Smith story in the Top Ten should be beaten with sticks."
