National Weather Service statement:
Meteorological winter and December both begin today with the first major winter storm for central and southern Minnesota and western Wisconsin. A low pressure center will slowly migrate northeast into western Iowa through early evening. Snowfall amounts in the 6 inch or higher range can be anticipated across much of the area by Sunday morning. A period of sleet or freezing rain is also expected across southern Minnesota and west central Wisconsin on Saturday evening and overnight. Winds between 15 and 25 mph will accompany this system, which will produce considerable blowing and drifting of snow.
