Motorcycle helmet laws

"Helmet Laws Suck" was the eloquent argument espoused by a motorcycle driver's jacket patch I spotted this morning, headed south on Highway 41.

Your thoughts?

I guess I wouldn't put it that way exactly, but I tend to agree. I think when it comes to Government, less is more. I'm tired of society (in general) trying to save us from ourselves. I would put seatbelt laws in this category as well. While I think it's the smarter route, it should still be a decision made on an individual basis.

Many people say it is common sense to have a helmet law especially since this affect a MINORITY of drivers. Since the vast majority of auto accidents are head injuries, why limit the protection of helmets to a small minority of vehicles? Let's mandate helmets for ALL vehicles. That would save far more lives than just mandating them for motorcycles. Common sense would dictate this.

Now that this would affect the MAJORITY of drivers (and their passengers), it may not sound like such a good idea.

In the end this is not a SAFETY issue, but a FREEDOM of choice issue.

Freedom of choice. Yes,...

Freedom of choice.

Yes, sounds good. Can I choose to not have one dime of my insurance money go to those who choose not to wear helmets while riding motorcycles? or non-seatbelt wearers?

Of course I write that tongue in cheek but the personal responsibility argument is an interesting one. Lots of people want it. But then when something bad happens many tend to forget what their argument actually means.

Persnal responsibility...

Back to page top

Persnal responsibility starts with a change in ALL insurance. Take Health Savings accounts. Like your motorcycle helmet argument, people would no longer burden everyone else with their personal (bad) choices...like smoking and poor diet. They'd have a catastrophic policy but pay for samll things out of their own health savings account.

Spread the word, especially in this era when idiots are pushing for taxpayers to pay for health care.

----------- and, in fact, it is eloquent. nanny government is just an officious, overly self-important body that thinks that their intuition about things (which usually affect somebody else ) is SO correct that they feel free to impose it on anybody... just because they CAN ! the funny thing about mandatory helmet laws is that they have yet to reduce the fatality RATE (fatalities per accident ).

ALL types of Mandatory legislation Suck! It's about time people took responsibility for their own actions and quit blaming the government when something does not go according to their wishes.
Forget mandatory helmet laws and let those who ride, decide. Those that chose to go helmetless will have to face responsibility for their action and those that chose to wear a "safety device" that actually increses the fatality rate from NECK injuries and has not been proven to lower the fatality rate from HEAD injuries will have to accept the responsibity for their own actions.
The only way to reduce motorcycle accidents statistics is through EDUCATION, for both riders and the general public as well.

Laws suck, society swallows....

Back to page top

Laws suck, society swallows. Anytime a basketball player tries to tell a soccer player how to play, there's gonna be chaos. This is the problem with self-government, inevitably, you get a Nannycrat in office who's only suckled from the gov't teet since college, and STILL can't balance his/her checkbook - telling YOU how to run YOUR successful business. It's the same with motorcycles and safety gear. Let those who ride decide. How's bout I tell your newspaper how to thread the giant rolls of paper through the spools? I wouldn't have a clue. It's like that. If I have to explain, you wouldn't understand. Until they invent the helmet that does the riding for you, there's always gonna be an element of skill involved with staying upright. Some people can walk and chew gum at the same time, others need to stick with tic tacs while remaining seated. In other words, leave me alone, and I will reciprocate in kind. Poke me with a stick, and I'll find a sharper stick.

Why on earth would anyone...

Back to page top

Why on earth would anyone ever willingly give up any right, liberty, or freedom? Big Brother government is never a good thing. Today the government wants to tell us when, where, and what kind of saftey gear we must wear. How long before they tell us what we can and can't eat? How long before they put us on mandatory exercise programs? Or forced medication? Helmet laws (AKA Nanny Laws) are not about safety. They're about who owns your body. You or the government? The only way I can tell you what to wear is if you are my slave, servant, or kid. Nanny laws are unamerican. Freedom, liberty, and personal responsibility is what America is all about. Just ask Ron Paul.

Back to page top

Anarchy is a pretty extreme description of someone who simply doesn't want the government making all their decisions.

Our Government has slowly but surely tightened it's grip on our lives - to the point that many of us get nervous when something (relatively) trivial such as helmet laws are discussed. Why? Because it starts with 'them' telling you to wear a helmet and before you know what hit you (no pun intended) they will be putting power-to-weight restrictions on the motorcycles themselves! I promise you it's not far off.

You can disguise just about anything if you do it gradually. No one knows that better than our government.
