The best things in life are free (or pretty darn close)

I'm not cheap, but I like stretching my dollar as far as possible so I'm constantly on the look out for opportunities to have fun without breaking the bank. The good news is that there are plenty of opportunities out there that involve little more than divulging your e-mail address.

My favorite freebies are movies. I just saw the really funny Charlie Bartlett [1] last night courtesy of a pair of free screening passes. It doesn't come out until 2008 so not only was it free, but it was a sneak preview WAY in advance which is totally cool.

You too can get free movie passes by signing up with the Landmark Film Club. [2] It's great if you're into seeing good indie films like Death at a Funeral [3] and Broken English [4]. True, you'll have to trek to Uptown or Edina to see the films, but I've yet to be disappointed by anything that I've seen.

Like bowling? You can do that for free, too. Brunswick Lanes in Eden Prairie offers free bowling coupons to those that sign up for the Brunswick Zone on their Web site [5]. As soon as you enlist, you'll receive a coupon good for a free hour of bowling for you and up to four of your friends, plus they regularly send coupons good for 99-cent bowling (a steep cut from their regular price of $4.50/game).

For a little money, you can also get freebies from your favorite zoos and museums. A membership to the Minnesota Zoo [6] will earn you free tickets to VIP events and exhibit openings (which usually feature pretty decent free food as well). Same at the Walker Art Center [7] and the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. [8]

Want to visit the Twin Cities' museums without spending a dime? Check out the Museum Adventure Pass [10]. MELSA libraries (like those in the Carver, Scott and Hennepin County library systems) have free passes for more than 20 local favorites like the Mill City Museum, the Science Museum of Minnesota and Murphy's Landing. All you need is a library card.
