The reunited Gear Daddies are scheduled for the 25th annual Taste of Minnesota on July 1, according to a press release.
They join the Charlie Daniels Band and Village People on the lineup, which begs the question: Is the beloved Minnesota band now considered an oldies band?
How many years does it take to be an oldies band? I would guess about 20.
Along with many other Minnesotans my age, I remember the band raucously rocking it out in local college venues.
Would other Minnesota bands, like the Replacements and Husker Du/Gear Daddies also be considered oldies bands? It's just a matter of time before their songs are playing on classic rock stations or car commercials.
I almost expect to see the bands playing state fair line-ups, missing a few musicians, ala Mike Nesmith during the Monkees reunion tour.
Perhaps they could group all of Minnesota’s just-missed-out-on-the-grunge-scene bands together for some sort of retrospective outdoor concert.
They would just need to make sure the show is over before the 10 o’clock news.
