Peter parks one at SpamTown Classic

Chaska entered the SpamTown Classic amateur baseball tournament with designs on sticking around Austin until Sunday.

The Cubs stuck around all right.

Chaska suffered a last-at-bat setback in the opener on Friday, but waited out rain to win a pair of games and reach the semifinals on Sunday.

But another late loss ended the long weekend.

Due to storms on Saturday, the Cubs were forced to finish one game and play two more on Sunday.

The opener against the Austin Greyhounds on Friday night went well, as Chaska pitcher Craig Gralapp gave up just four hits over six-plus frames, and struck out one.

But the fourth hit was the doozy. Austin's Craig Braaten hit a 'walk-off' homer in the bottom of the seventh to lift the Greyhounds to a 3-2 victory.

Amateur baseball games are usually scheduled for nine innings, though tournaments often vary.

The Cubs' Ryan Seifert smacked a homer and added a double to lead the Cub batters. Chaska outfielders Troy Harlander and Cass Mosley had hits, as did second baseman Eric Oscarson.

Austin's Matt Cano capitalized on a pair of sixth-inning walks with a two-run double that tied the game in the bottom of the sixth.

The Cubs had five hits, struck out seven times and did not draw a walk against Austin ace Dave Meyer.

Cub righthander Matt Lane then tossed a shutout over Brookings, S.D. Brad Keenan continued his powerful summer by hitting a two-run home run and scored after clubbing a double. The game was delayed by rain on Saturday, and finished on Sunday morning.

Pete parks one

The Cubs’ Pete Ohnsorg then cemented an All-Tournament Team award with a banner game in a 2-1 win over defending Class A champion Minnetonka.

Ohnsorg pitched a complete game, allowing the powerful Millers just four hits, and also cracking a two-run home run in the top of the final inning.

Miller lefty Brandon Broxey surrendered just two Cub hits over the first six frames. But a single by Tyler Polster and a sacrifice bunt by Chris Brown set the stage for Ohnsorg, who was batting for the first time in the game.

The Cubs finished with a tough 9-8 loss to the Owatonna Aces on Sunday afternoon.

Chaska had the game in the bag, but Owatonna was all aces at the end, lining up five hits in a row and scoring six runs in the seventh inning.

Loss at Shako

Both teams had all its scoring happen early in a makeup game Monday at Shakopee. But the home team had a couple more to win a 3-1 pitchers’ duel.

The Cubs’ Seifert and Shakopee’s Tim Theis put up 15 combined shutout innings after Chaska scored one and the home team answered with three in the first inning.

The Cubs now are 1-2 against Shakopee, a chief Section 3B rival, as well as co-host of the state amateur tournament in August.

Chaska is back at home on Tuesday to face 3B foe Prior Lake for a 7:30 p.m. game at Athletic Park.

The Cubs have a rematch against Minnetonka 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Millers’ home park of Veterans Field on the Minnetonka High School campus.

The Cubs then host Jordan at 6 p.m. on Sunday, for Community Values Day.
