The Chaska Cubs are a strong team made up of veterans and young players - guys who can do it all, and many who fill small-but-important roles.
But now that the state amateur baseball tournament is near, the team will have some help.
The Cubs drafted three players for the state-tournament run from the Section 3B pool: Shakopee pitcher Tim Theis, Victoria catcher Erik Winegarden and Green Isle pitcher Matt Breyer.
Theis, a tall lefthander, is a frequent Cub draftee, having joined Chaska for the 2005, 2006 and 2007 state tourneys. The Shakopee High School and University of Minnesota graduate was picked by the Cubs with the second selection.
Winegarden, an Eden Prairie High School graduate, plays catcher, as well as DHs and plays infield for the Vics.
Breyer was an All-Tournament Team selection when Green Isle won the Class C title in 2003.
Jordan, the Section 3B champion, also picked up help, selecting Green Isle ace Mac Zachow with the first pick.
The Brewers also tabbed two more from the Irish, selecting pitcher John Schaffler with the third pick and catcher Derek Roberts with the fifth pick.
The Cubs open the state tournament at 5 p.m. on Saturday against Dundas at Athletic Park.

I have never liked the idea...
Back to page topI have never liked the idea of being able to draft for the state tournaments.
You should have to use the players that got you there, and all through the season.
With the current system, it gets down to not only who plays better, but also who did a better job of drafting.
