The second day of the state Class B Amateur Baseball Tournament at Shakopee’s Joe Schleper Stadium had a handful of fine games, punctuated by a big upset.

Savage edged Cold Spring 5-3 on Sunday night to advance to the double-elimination round next weekend.

Savage pitcher Brandon Walczak gave up two runs on seven hits, while striking out eight.

The Outlaws completed the upset with a 12-hit attack against Springer pitcher Zach Femrite, who entered the game with a 14-1 season record. Femrite finished with 12 strikeouts.

Tony Peterson clubbed a solo home run for Savage in the seventh inning to provide the final margin. Pat Abbe and Chris Steenburg each had three hits for the Outlaws.

The Springers finished with a 40-5 record, and had their 21st consecutive state tournament appearance cut short.

Savage (19-10) will take on Miesville at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 17 at Shakopee.

Eagan 7, Coon Rapids 2

Eagan scored three runs in the third and seventh innings to down Coon Rapids 7-2. Eagan pitcher Jeremy Liebherr gave up four hits, walked six and struck out six over seven innings.

Billy DeNet had two hits and drove in two runs, Dan Norsten went 3-for-5 with an RBI and Charlie Borrell added an RBI knock for Eagan.

Eagan advances to play Dundas at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 23 at Shakopee.

Mankato 13, Austin 9

Mankato,
the 2006 state champions, outgunned the Austin Greyhounds 13-9.

Dane Secott picked up the win for Mankato, tossing 6-2/3 innings of relief after the Greyhounds took an 8-6 lead with a 6-run third inning.

Jeff Nessler led the final rally for the Twins, doubling in a pair of eighth-inning runs. Dane Allen then smashed a two-run home run to complete the 5-run inning.

Big hits were the name of the game, with Mankato putting up six runs in the first inning, and Ryan Greene adding a solo homer in the fifth frame.

Austin had 14 hits in the game, including a solo home run by Craig Braaten in the fourth inning.

Mankato now plays St. Michael at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 23 at Chaska’s Athletic Park.

Marshall 10, Rochester 9

Marshall held off Rochester 10-9 in the first game of the day, scoring three runs in the second, third and fourth innings.

A ninth-inning Marshall run made it 10-5, but the Royals rallied for four runs in the bottom of the
ninth.

Jim Strain led the Royals’ near-comeback, hitting a three-run home run in the seventh inning and stroking a two-run double in the ninth.

Matt Paulson keyed a 13-hit offensive output for Marshall, collecting two hits and driving in three. Derek West had three RBI and Ryan Norman batted in two for the winners.

Marshall takes on Maple Lake at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 23 at Athletic Park.
