New look for State Patrol squad cars

The Minnesota State Patrol rolled-out a new look for their squad cars on March 26, unveiling a throwback design reflecting the Patrol squads used during 1960-1991.

The new State Patrol squad design incorporates a maroon body with white doors, according to a Minnesota Department of Public Safety press release.

“The design aims to strengthen the identity and brand of the State Patrol to help motorists better recognize troopers, understand their duties, and how the agency supports safe travel on Minnesota roads. The new look will also have a visibility impact — enhancing trooper safety and helping the agency stand out among other vehicles to encourage safe driving,” the release stated.

New squads phased into the State Patrol fleet will incorporate the new look. Current squads — which are maroon with a gold stripe along the sides — will not be outfitted with the new design.

There are no extra costs to the new design. The Patrol has around 490 marked units, and about 680 vehicles in its entire fleet.

While the design features a retro look — including a vintage Patrol badge — all Patrol squads are outfitted with high-tech components including: radar, laser, video camera, 800 Mhz radio, VHF radio, scanner, GPS, computer, and docking station, the release stated.
