Laura Egdorf, a May 2009 summa cum laude graduate from the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities, with a dual major in anthropology and psychology, has been chosen as the 2009-2010 volunteer for Education without Borders.
Beginning this September, Egdorf will work at Fezeka High School in Guguletu, a shantytown just outside of Cape Town, South Africa, according to a press release.
Her work there will involve developing and implementing an after-school tutoring program to address the needs of the disadvantaged black youth of Fezeka
To establish this after-school program, Egdorf will use a model similar to that of Ikamva Youth – the non-profit organization she volunteered for in Cape Town in June/July 2008.
“What first interested me in South Africa was their history of social segregation and being curious as to how people were overcoming the extensive discriminatory policies put in place during the Apartheid, which ‘ended’ in 1994.
“I have witnessed and now realize that only through the development of reliable and resourceful educational programs will the disadvantaged youth of South Africa be given a chance to rise up with the confidence to look beyond the invisible walls of the society that contain them to the greater possible opportunities available to them,” Egdorf stated in a press release.Egdorf’s one year position in Cape Town is voluntary and is only possible from the support of family and friends.
