Two years ago Chaska was No. 8 on Money Magazine’s list of best places to live in the country. The ranking resulted in two years of vigorous bragging by Chaska residents and officials.
Now, in the latest list, Chaska has dropped to No. 20, only to be smoked by … Chanhassen?
Chanhassen is No. 2 on Money’s list for cities with populations of 8,500 to 50,000.
Money Magazine gave Chan props for lower than average unemployment, dropping property taxes, its triple-A bond rating and its multitude of parks. One resident notes that “There’s a genuine small-town feel” to the city.
Meanwhile Money credits Chaska for working to "maintain its small-town vibe." The magazine also claims that "The recent completion of Rt. 212 into the Twin Cities has halved commutes and lured new businesses into Chaska, but it has also caused a bump in traffic (and a slight bump in crime)."
Louisville, Colo. made its way to No. 1 this year.

It's not the first time Chan...
Back to page topIt's not the first time Chan made the list. It was ranked No. 16 in 2005. Eden Prairie was ranked No. 10 in 2006.
In 2008, Money ranked Carver County as No. 3 in its "Best places for a long life" list: http://money.cnn.com/galleries/2008/moneymag/0809/gallery.bestplaces_lif....
But Chaska is the only...

So 212 is causing the bump...
Back to page topSo 212 is causing the bump in crime. hmmm
I was curious about that...
Back to page topI was curious about that statement too, so I called Chaska Police Chief Scott Knight.
“Traffic is better than it was prior to 212 opening,” Knight said, pointing out Chaska Boulevard (old Highway 212) and County Road 110.
Pertaining to crime, Knight said he hasn’t seen a bump in crime related to new Highway 212 since it opened last July. “We’d be the first to know, and I know nothing about it,” Knight said.
Money Magazine noted that crime statistics in the report are based on "FBI 2007 Universal Crime and incidence reports, OnBoard analysis."
The FBI report would have covered data before Highway 212 opened to Carver.
