The music of the nyckelharpa
February 4, 2008 - 5:21pm — Mark Olson
The Nordic Heritage Club’s next meeting is 7:30 p.m., Friday, Feb. 8 at the Acorn House in Victoria, at 8475 Kochia Lane, next to the Victoria Field House. The meeting features Elise Peters, executive director of the Swedish Council of America, based in Minneapolis. Peters will play nyckelharpa (or key fiddle) for the program. Nyckelharpa is an instrument which originated in Sweden, and dates back to medieval times. It has 16 strings and 37 keys. Some consider the nyckelharpa to be the national instrument of Sweden, where it is featured on the 50 crown note. For more information on Carver County's growing interest in its Scandinavian history, check out this Herald story.
