Romney carries Chaska's GOP vote

» Read similar stories filed under:

“I’m trying to keep McCain from being elected. Go Romney!” said Ward 3 resident Roy Henderson, during Monday night’s Republican caucus in Chaska.

Henderson wasn’t alone. Mitt Romney handedly carried Chaska during the Republican caucuses on Tuesday night, with John McCain a distant second.

The unofficial results of the straw poll:

Mitt Romney: 214

John McCain: 71

Mike Huckabee: 44

Ron Paul: 41

Alan Keyes: 0

Total votes: 370

(The poll is non-binding on the Republican delegates who were chosen at the caucuses.)

Turnout was huge at the Chaska GOP caucuses, held at Chaska Middle School East. Residents packed the school’s cafeteria, and the parking lot was overflowing, with dozens waiting in line to sign in.

Sen. Norm Coleman sent a statement related to Romney's decision to suspend his presidential campaign:

“I want to thank Governor Romney for his commitment to his nation and his party.

"His participation in this historic election gave a strong voice to conservative ideals that I believe will be carried forward by John McCain.

"Americans recognize that our future economic security rests with national security, and John McCain, better than anyone else in this campaign, recognizes this reality.

"Mitt Romney deserves the thanks of Republicans and Americans for his steadfast belief in the future of our nation.

"It is clear that Republicans will be able to, very soon, rally around the candidacy of John McCain and begin presenting his positive vision for a country in which people can work together to move our nation forward."
