Brad Hand got in his second

Brad Hand got in his second game for the Marlins' GCL club on Sunday afternoon against the Nationals.

Hand pitched the fourth and fifth innings, and gave up three earned runs on four hits, walked one and struck out three.

Hand surrendered a single to start the fourth inning, then struck out the next three batters.

The Marlins won the game 8-6.

So, do you think (besides talent), the key to Hand's success is keeping a flat rim on his cap?

I heard two radio announcers go on for about five minutes, talking about flat-rimmed caps during the state baseball tournament.

Andy Bisek started the 74 kg

Andy Bisek started the 74 kg U.S. Wrestling Olympic Team Trials strong, with a first-round bye as the bracket’s top seed and a victory in the quarterfinals Saturday at Las Vegas.

Bisek defeated Brandon McNab of the U.S. Army club 5-0, 3-0 to gain a semifinal match against Cheney Haight of New York AC.

But Haight took down Bisek by a score of 1-1, 1-1, 4-0.

Haight went on to take first place in the bracket, and gain a match against T.C. Dantzler, who had earned an automatic finals spot.

Bisek dropped to the one-loss side of the bracket, and fell 4-0, 1-1, 5-0 to Jess Hargrave, also of U.S. Army. Hargrave finished fourth in the tournament.

Dantzler, of the Gator Wrestling Club, won the best-of-three series over Haight to claim a place on the U.S. Olympic team as it travels to Beijing for the 2008 Summer Olympic Games.

Another Minnesota River Valley ball player, Shakopee senior pitcher Chase Hentges, was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the 14th round with the 415th pick of the Major League Baseball draft, according to the Shakopee Valley News.

I'm impressed by the fact that not only is he the all-over #52 pick, but of those 52, he's just the 19th high-school ballplayer; the rest all are from college.

And of the 10 LHP's, he's just the 4th one at the high school level. Pretty impressive!

Ben Sathre runs in the 3,200 finals in the second race of the state meet, at 9:20 a.m. on Friday. He then competes in the 1,600 finals at 10:31 a.m. on Saturday.

Paul Yerhot competes in Heat 1 of the preliminaries of the 100 dash on Friday at 10:25 a.m. The finals are set for 9:55 a.m. on Saturday.

Lauren Rothschiller gets started with the long jump competition at 9 a.m. on Friday, and finishes with the triple jump at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

Jerde starts his state-title defense in the high jump at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

Brad Hand's home runs on Saturday established a pair of Chaska longball records. His seventh home run of the season gave him 13 for his career - putting him ahead of Justin Johnson's 12 (he hit six in both the 2000 and 2001 seasons). Hand's eighth dinger gave him the Hawk single-season record, set by Anthony Brenner who clubbed seven in 2005.

Chaska's run at the Section 2-3A tournament is over. The Hawks fell 2-0 to New Prague on Thursday at Mankato to finish 6-16 on the season.

Softball no-no: Eagan

Softball no-no: Eagan sophomore pitcher Sara Moulton fired a no-hitter on Thursday as the top-ranked Wildcats blanked Chaska 3-0.
Eagan got a run in the fifth inning and added two more in the sixth.
The Hawks are now 6-14 going into the playoffs and finished 3-11 in the Lake.

Brad Hand is now 5-1 on the season with two saves, 65 strikeouts and a 0.55 earned-run average.
He has surrendered 18 hits and three earned runs while walking 25 in 38-1/3 innings.
Hitting-wise, he has a .333 average (18-for-54) with two doubles, a triple and five home runs. He is second on the team to Adam Peterson in RBI with 14.

Cory Glieden is hitting .375 (24-for-64) with five doubles, a triple and seven RBI. He leads the Hawks with 15 runs scored. He is 4-for-4 in stolen bases and has drawn seven walks.

John Straka is batting .255 (13-for-51) with four doubles and a home run and 10 RBI.
He is 3-3 as a pitcher, with 47 strikeouts and just seven walks in 43-2/3 innings. Straka has tossed four complete games, including a nine-inning win over Lakeville North and a 1-0 loss to Apple Valley, and has an ERA of 1.28.
