Grandma Carol reports that

Grandma Carol reports that Emma's benefit was a huge success:
"There were about 700 people there and they served 650 dinners. On Thursday and Friday, they had lots and lots of silent auction items brought in. Many sets of sporting event tickets, theater tickets, etc. Some of them worth $200 to $400 each. It was bigger than anyone of us imagined. We did run out of spaghetti just before it was time to quit. We cooked 70 pounds of spaghetti noodles and served 60 pounds of salad! They deposited several thousand dollars into an account for Emma. Money for the silent auction items and other donations have been coming in also."

FYI: In conjunction with Worlds Away, the Walker and the Metropolitan Design Center are presenting the panel discussion Next Exit: The Shifting Landscape of Suburbia.

The free program, at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 24, addresses issues facing city planners, designers, and developers as our Minnesota suburbs continue to grow. In today's expanding metropolitan areas, the lines between urban and suburban are blurring.

Panelists Lance Nekar, Metropolitan Design Center; Dan Bergin of Twin Cities Public Television; and Michael Lander of Lander Group, a development corporation, will discuss population growth, immigration, and transportation, how suburbs are becoming destination environments, and the cultural implications of these shifts.

Independent journalist Todd Melby moderates what should be a lively debate and discussion.

For people who have "outgrown" egg hunts, I love the Pioneer Press idea of a Peeps contest.
http://extra.twincities.com/car/peeps/default.asp
Every year, I plan to enter but I never get around to it. So fun!

Does anyone out there have any personal stories of the Civil Rights movement?

If so, what do you remember about those times?

Did MLK's work, such as his "I have a Dream" speech, result in classroom or kitchen table discussions you remember as a child?

Update from Cindy Just

Update from Cindy Just (Jon's mother) received via email today:

"The ride on Sept. 30th went well inspite of the weather. The rain stopped just in time for us to leave Chaska (38 bikers braved the weather) but down poured the other side of Carver for about 15 minutes. Then no rain the rest of the 100 mile ride!!

I spoke with a friend on Monday who said that in LeSueur (we were 8 miles from there on the ride) they had had 3" of rain that afternoon - and we didn't get a drop of it!! It had also rained in Chaska the whole time we were gone - stopping about 15 minutes before we returned.

I truly believe that God put up a huge umbrella of protection to cover us while we were on the ride - we could see evidence of rain all around us - but none on the road we were riding on!!!

In spite of the lower numbers this year (though we did still feed 175 for dinner), we are currently at $12,000 being raised - more than last year by about $2,000 !!!!!! God is certainly showing us that He doesn't need good weather or a lot of motorcycles to accomplish His work!!!!

We're excited to see if the motorcycles can indeed be placed near Melissa so she can be part of the presentation.(I'm hoping that my husband, David might be able to go to Africa and be part of that process also).

I can't believe no one has chosen funnel cakes. I'm not a big fan, but when I googled fair foods, they dominated everyone's list of favorites.

At the state fair, you have

At the state fair, you have to visit the carved butter head in the dairy barn, then get a milkshake. Yum!

Other "must" stops include a corn dog, mini-donuts, a bucket o' cookies, and the fresh lemonade stand.

Of course, I bring helpers along to the fair. My friends and I split everything and sample a bunch of food without feeling extraordinarily fat.

Fair food I'd pass up - cheese curds. Fried candy bars. Giant turkey legs. Ick.

The little furry guy from "Gremlins"?

Joking aside...favorite fair food: mini donuts. And they have to be the ones from the big Tom Thumb stand. None of this second-rate mini-donut eating.

Gizmo sandwiches! If you haven't tried one, it's a definite must this year. Here's a link that shows where they are located at the fairgrounds: http://gopher.mnstatefair.org/brbb/details.lasso?id=000095A&keywords=
