Our lawn and gardens

Our lawn and gardens received a nice watering on Tuesday, when 0.34" of rain fell in Chaska. More rain is expected toward the weekend, with temperatures in the 60's. Let's hope for nice weather for fishing...and Mother's Day!

Boats on Prior Lake and fishermen galore on the shore! A full parking lot at the dog park! Bicycles, scooters, runners and, yes, even a gentleman on his riding lawn mower!

That's what I saw -- It was definitely a well-rounded weekend!

What a beautiful weekend!

What a beautiful weekend! Saturday (May 3) started out chilly, but it ended up being a nice day for 'Christmas in May' activities in Chaska, with a high temperature of 55 degrees. Sunday was even warmer, with a high temp of 68 degrees. I saw a lot of neighbors out in their yards this weekend - a sight that I had not seen in 6 months!

May started out wet this

May started out wet this year, with Chaska receiving 1.54" of rain between May 1 and May 3. It almost seems as though you can see the grass turning green right before your very eyes! Soon our neighborhoods will be filled with the delightful sounds of buzzing lawn mowers and churning tillers....

Hey, thanks! Last year, I

Hey, thanks! Last year, I bought some of those "biscuits" that are supposed to neutralize the grass-burning urine components but it really didn't seem to make a difference.

Basically, the dogs got an expensive treat and I had to pay a fine to the homeowners' association for lawn repair -- we're allowed to take matters into our own hands, but the HOA decided to re-sod vs. re-seed last year and then the lawn boy spun about on his zero-turning radius mower and moved the sod patch (never did really take).

I want to get a jump on it this year -- and I'll see what I can do about keeping the dogs in the rocks.

That first thunderstorm

That first thunderstorm provided 0.40" of welcome rain for Chaska - "liquid green" for our lawns! We also enjoyed a summer-like 76 degrees on Monday afternoon....wasn't that great!!

You will probably want to

You will probably want to water the area very well (to flush the excess salt/nitrogen out of the soil), and then either wait for the soil and grass to recover, or reseed the area. If you want to speed that recovery process along, you can replace the top few inches of soil in that area with bagged topsoil/compost blend from a garden center before you reseed. You could also attempt to train your dog(s) to go in an area that is landscaped with woodchips rather than grass underfoot. Finally, in the summer, simply apply a good amount of water to the area after your dogs are done, before the urea has a chance to burn the grass. Simple!

Ice was completely gone from Lake Bavaria yesterday afternoon. It started breaking up Sunday afternoon, and there were still huge sheets of ice left Monday morning.

That's around one month later than last year.

Time to get the boat out!

The greenery of what will

The greenery of what will become daffodils is up nearly 3 inches already at my house.

The grass, however, is wondering just how much dog urine it took in atop the snow and is now represented in large yellow circles throughout the yard. Other than reseeding, is there any advice for undoing this damage?
