Having spent my childhood

Having spent my childhood years in downtown Chaska, I believe that one fantastic way to make it great is to make it WALKABLE! If you go to any small town, they take pride in their pedestrians. Chaska does not allow for shoppers to walk, cross, and shop with ease on both sides of Chestnut street (that would be HWY 41 to some).

Being from a large family, we were blessed to live in Chaska. My parents did not cart us around to events, we walked, biked and even roller skated to where we needed to be. In the event of rain, snow, or a distance longer than 3 miles, my mom would start up the Maverick to deliver the kids, and that included everyone who lived near us. Carpooling was done not because of time constraints, it was done because it is the right thing to do.

When I was 13, a friend and I would play frizbee on Chestnut street on Sunday evenings. Not many cars, and we both learned how to throw a bounce pass with a frizbee. I know that my children will not be able to experience the Chaska I grew up with, but it would be nice to have them experience outdoor shopping, walking to events, and just enjoying the 'slow' part of a small town.

In this week's print edition of the Chaska Herald, three downtown residents shared their visions for downtown Chaska. No idea was too big or too small.
